After years of searching, we have found a family that has converted an old, conventional coffee farm to one that is farming sustainably. Mesa se los Santos is the name of the farm that began growing coffee in 1872. It is located in Northeastern Colombia in the county of of Santander, 20 kilometers south of Bucaramanga. The coffee is grown at an altitude of 1600 meters and the area has an average yearly rainfall of 36 inches. The Acevedo family has made a strong commitment to farming sustainably. The farm has 91 hectares planted in coffee and maintains cattle and chickens for compost making along with the coffee pulp. Weeds are maintained by hand. A variety of shade trees protect the coffee trees and provide a winter home for migrating birds.
