Senna leaves come from a genus of flowering plants (sennas) native to most tropical regions. They have been used for hundreds of years or more as a purgative, particularly effective for constipation or blockages on the lower bowel. Senna leaves irritate the mucosa of the colon and so increase the peristaltic pumping motion of the colon. It is for its laxative properties that senna is best known, although it also possesses some other useful properties.

Senna leaves can be used to eradicate intestinal worms and generally help to maintain a healthy bowel.
