The Echinacea, or coneflower, plant is found growing wild only in the central plains states of the United States. Its benefits for health were well known by the Native Americans, including the Sioux, Cheyenne, Choctaw, Comanche, Crow, and Kiowa tribes. Early settlers learned the value Echinacea from them, and sent plants back to Europe, where it became very popular even as its use in the United States declined. Much of the research on Echinacea has been done in Europe. Today, however, it has once again become well-known in the United States and is consistently one of the best selling herbal extracts on the market.
