DGL licorice, also spelled liquorice, is short for deglycyrrhizinated licorice, and is used as a herbal supplement in America and Europe for those with stomach problems and ulcers. The DGL version of licorice has had the glycyrrhizin removed, because that component is known to have the side effects of increasing blood pressure and inducing low potassium levels. DGL licorice has also had the sodium removed to reduce water retention.
