What is SAMe and what does it do? SAMe is S-adenosyl-L-methionine and it is neither a herb nor a vitamin, but a substance synthesized by your body's biochemistry. It is natural constituent of your body's cells and takes part in many biochemical reactions, among them the function of your nerves. Many do not generally recommend it as a supplement to be taken in isolation but along with an Omega-3 oil or multivitamin supplement. Whether this is necessary or not is open to debate. A supplement of SAMe is used by some people as an analgesic, with roughly the same properties as aspirin but without its side effects, particularly stomach irritation and bleeding. It is also used as an anti-depressant, and many that use it claim it to be a more effective anti-depressant that those prescription ones they have tried. Although it is a prescriptive drug for the treatment of liver disease and depression in the UK and Europe, ii is not regulated by the FDA in the USA and is available over the counter.
