Health Benefits of Bentonite Clay Bentonite was so-called because it was first found close to Fort Benton in Wyoming. It had been used by Native Americans for millennia for treating a variety of digestive problems and skin complaints, and the same is true of other cultures right round the world. When taken internally, it is believed to clean out the colon and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria within the digestive tract. It is used in much the same way today in the treatment of Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome, and also in alleviating constipation. Bentonite clay is also used as an antidote against heavy metal poising: cadmium and lead poisoning, and mercury and arsenic poisoning. It's highly porous negatively charged structure adsorbs these positively charged ions onto its surface by electrical attraction until they are evacuated naturally through your bowel movements. It can also be used in treating Candida, and its antibacterial properties are effective when applied to the skin, while bentonite clay perversely promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. When applied to the face as a mask, or even used as a mud bath, bentonite clay removes surface bacteria and helps to reduce the visible effects of skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis, and has been used in ancient cultures, such as that of Mesopotamia and Egypt, to beautify the skin and face.
