What Is Bentonite Clay Good For?

Bentonite clay can be used both internal and external to treat a range of skin and digestive conditions. Bentonite is actually a general name (not trade name) for a type of montmorillonite, a natural mineral that forms clay-like deposits. It is an effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease, and can also be taken for constipation. It is an effective detoxifier, adsorbing toxins such as heavy metals and other hazardous substances.

When bentonite clay swells up in contact with water, its physical structure becomes sponge-like. It is extremely porous with a very high surface area. The surface area both on the visible surface, and within the negatively charged porous spongy structure, attracts positively charged heavy metal ions, such as mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic, by electrical attraction, and holds onto these right through the system until expelled naturally.

The same is true of many toxins and bacteria that the spongy substance can also hold onto. The bentonite itself is not digested or absorbed into your system but passes right through unchanged, taking the toxins with it.

Bentonite is also used in skin and facial masks, and can help to clear the skin from the effects of acne and other unsightly conditions. It has also been used successfully on diaper and nappy rash, hives, boils, cysts insect stings and many other skin conditions where its proven antibacterial properties are also useful.

Bentonite is a soft, volcanic clay mined from various locales around the world. It is a rich source of trace minerals and has good absorptive properties, making it a popular bulk-forming agent. For best results, consume with plenty of fluids and bulk-forming fibers.
