Senna Herb: the Powerful Colon Cleanser

The herbal remedy now popularly known by the name "Senna" is also referred to as Cassia Acutifolia, or Leguminosae. In traditional Chinese medicine it is called Fan xia ye, and has been used and respected as a natural medicine in India and China for thousands of years. Senna grows naturally in many tropical regions of the world. Traditionally Senna is prepared into medicinal powders for internal use, and the powder is often put into capsules to make it easier to swallow. These days it's readily available in herbal teas and even liquid extract forms. Normal dosage amounts are between 50 to 100 milligrams in capsule form or up to ½ teaspoon of the liquid leaf extract daily, but it's generally best to follow the instructions given on the packaging you buy, mainly because some varieties of Senna are stronger than others. One of the most common reasons Senna is taken is as a laxative in cases of severe constipation. Senna contains chemicals known as glycosides that help the colon to produce fluids that soften the stool in your body, thus promoting bowel movements.

Many people have been known to benefit from taking Senna if they have one or more of the following symptoms: fever, intestinal worms, skin conditions like psoriasis, hypertension, or obesity. It is often recommended that while taking Senna, you should also take ginger or fennel seeds at the same time to prevent nausea or diarrhea. Whatever amount of Senna you take, one quarter of that amount should be either ginger or fennel. Senna's antibacterial properties are what help counteract any intestinal worms you may have, and it cools the entire intestinal tract.

It's especially imperative to note that while taking Senna or in any case of constipation you need to drink lots of water! It sounds so simple, but often many people live chronically dehydrated for most of their lives, feeling tired on a regular basis and generally constipated. Normal bowel movements should happen at least once a day, otherwise toxins will accumulate inside your colon and GI tract, gradually spreading into surrounding body tissues and causing all kinds of diseases.

Senna, like any herbal medicine, does not work the same way for everyone, so please read the following carefully to make sure you won't suffer any negative side effects:

It is generally advised not to continue taking Senna for more than a week, unless you are under the supervision of a naturopathic, ayurvedic, or other doctor certified in traditional natural health care practices. Some people will not benefit from taking Senna, and should seek other herbal remedies if suffering from any of the following: colitis, hemorrhoids, kidney problems, abnormal abdominal pains, heavy diarrhea, prolapsed rectum, and serious digestive troubles such as Crohn's disease.

Additionally, if you are currently experiencing chills in your body, tremors, insomnia, dizziness or depression, your constipation will not be best relieved by taking Senna either. With these symptoms it would be better to cure your constipation by taking laxative oils, and eating lots of well-cooked vegetables, sesame seeds, almonds, cooked onions, and especially hot vegetable soups. Fruits that help healthy bowel movements with no negative side effects include bananas and papayas.

Finally, do not combine taking Senna with certain heart medications like Calan or Procardia. Another medication called Indocin also isn't meant to be taken with Senna. Senna is when taken as directed.
