Hazelnuts (Corylus spp.), also known as filberts, are a type of nut native to southern Europe and Turkey.
Hazelnuts are very healthy, containing over 90 percent monounsaturated fat (good fat) and less than 4 percent saturated fat (bad fat). They provide an excellent profile of essential nutrients, including significant amounts of protein, fiber, vitamin E, folic acid, iron, and more.
From the FDA's website: "Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as Hazelnuts (Filberts) as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease."
