Pycnogenol and Your Blood Flow
Pycnogenol is a commercial trade-named product produced from extracts of the bark of the French maritime pine tree. It is largely a mixture of the antioxidant Vitamins C and E, and also the powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory proanthocyanidins that are among the most powerful antioxidants that nature gives us. Pycnogenol can do a great deal in ensuring healthy blood and a healthy cardiovascular system in general.
Proanthocyanidins help to increase the nitric oxide (NO) content of your blood. NO has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscles in your body, including those that form the walls of your arteries. High blood pressure is caused by your heart having to pump too hard and at too high a pressure to force oxygenated blood round your body - every cell needs oxygen for its survival. With the arteries relaxed, they are easier to stretch and expand, and so your heart doesn't have to struggle to get that blood round these thousands of miles of arteries and capillaries.
Pycnogenol also helps to prevent your arteries becoming clogged with cholesterol. It destroys the free radicals that make that happen when they oxidize the low density lipids (LDL) carrying the cholesterol, thus forcing the LDL cholesterol to deposit as plaques on the walls of your arteries and effectively restricting your blood flow. It is an excellent supplement to take if you want to retain a healthy heart, brain and blood flow around your entire body.

Proanthocyanidins also support the integrity of elastin and collagen, important constituents of connective tissue.
