If you’re average-sized and have difficulty gaining muscle, chances are you have somewhere between 3000 and 5000 nanograms of testosterone per liter of blood in your body. Obviously, the higher the amount of testosterone your body produces, the better the chance you have of adding more muscle to your frame. It is also important to note that much of the testosterone produced doesn’t even reach the muscle. Around 98 percent of testosterone is “bound” and the other two percent is “unbound.” A “bound” testosterone molecule is bound to a protein molecule and is prevented from interacting with muscle tissue. However, the other 2 percent of unbound testosterone binds to what are known as androgen receptors. These androgen receptors then travel deep into muscle fibers and send a message to your DNA to begin making larger muscle fibers. This is how you grow.
