Historical Ethnobotanical Information: 
In the 
amazon a tea or extract was taken to create powerful action on 
the kidneys; thus the name ‘stone breaker’ or ‘Chanca Piedra’. 
Ashinika tribes of Peru have used it as a treatment for 
hepatitis because it is thought to be rich in anti oxidants and 
liver protective agents.* In some studies, it was thought to 
help break up and pass kidney stones. 

Chanca Piedra - (tops) - Phyllanthus niruri - It’s name, “Stone 
Breaker”, tells of its great effectiveness in breaking up kidney 
stones. This is partly due to its diuretic action, which also 
promotes positive urinary function. It is also know as an 
anti-hepatotoxic and anti-spasmodic, among other traditional 
claims.
