Bentonite clay is a form of montmorillonite, named after Fort Benton, Wyoming, where it was first discover in America. Montmorillonite is the sodium salt of an aluminum silicate, containing 4 times the silicon dioxide of bentonite and is also more hydrated, and those that describe the two as being equivalent are wrong.
It had been used for centuries, if not millennia, by Native Americans for a number of purposes, including medicinal ones where it helped with digestive issues such as constipation.
