Subject: Safety Profile – Environmental Concerns and Omega-3

In recent years, concerns about mercury contamination and other environmental pollutants in fish have emerged. Mercury occurs naturally in the environment and can also be released into the air through industrial pollution. Mercury falls from the air and can accumulate in streams and oceans and is turned into methylmercury in the water. It is this type of mercury that can be harmful to you, your unborn baby and your children.

Nearly all fish and shellfish contain traces of methylmercury. However, the fish that have lived longer have the highest levels of methylmercury because they’ve had more time to accumulate it. These large fish (Swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish) pose the greatest risk.

Pregnant women, women planning to conceive, nursing mothers and children should avoid eating fish high in mercury – shark, king mackerel, swordfish, and tile fish. A study published in the January 2005 issue of the Archives or Pathology and Laboratory Medicine concluded that fish oil supplements may be safer than eating fish, at least from the standpoint of toxic impurities. The authors write, “Fish oil supplements are more healthful than the consumption of fish high in organichlorines (pesticides). Fish oils provide the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids without the risk of toxicity”. The availability of high-quality omega-3 fatty acids supplements, free of contaminants, is an important prerequisite to their extensive use. Care should be taken to read levels and look for a product that has been purified.

Fish oil saves lives and is something that physicians can safely offer patients as an alternative or adjunct therapy. The fish story is far from over. Omega-3 fatty acids are being studied in a wide spectrum of conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, renal disease, psychiatric illnesses and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer disease. The availability of safe and reliable fish supplements is vital for further exploring the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.
