What is it? The medicine called ginkgo biloba is derived from the leaves of the ginkgo tree, an ornamental tree growing in temperate climates. The plant's reputed most active chemicals, gingko flavone glycosides and the ginkgolides, are generally extracted from the leaves and turned into tablets of various potency. The gingolides are especially potent. They are unique to the ginkgo tree and are not found anywhere else in nature.
Where is it from? Ginkgo has been used in China and the Far East for over 5,000 years to heal a wide variety of ailments. It grows in temperate climates throughout the world and is often found in public areas such as parks because of its longevity and hardiness. Ginkgo comes from the oldest species of tree in the world dating back some 200 million years. Some ginkgo trees have been known to live well over 1,000 years or more.
What is it used for? Ginkgo improves brain function by increasing cerebral and peripheral blood flow, circulation, and oxygenation. Ginkgo is a very strong antioxidant, meaning it protects cells from damage, an underlying cause of all bodily disintegration, including dysfunctional brain cells and clogged blood vessels in the brain, heart, and extremities.
