Hawthorn Berry (Crategus oxyacantha)
Definition: Known as a botanical heart tonic, hawthorn berries were popular with the ancient Greeks and traditionally used to treat high and low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart pain and atherosclerosis. Native Americans look to the berry for its therapeutic effect on rheumatism and digestive difficulties.
Applications: Angina, irregular heartbeat, blood pressure disorders, congestive heart failure, hypertension, coronary artery disease, high cholesterol, nervous disorders, insomnia, Reynaud's syndrome and sore throat.
Scientific Updates: The cardiotonic properties of hawthorn are well documented. The flavonoid content of hawthorn berry has been clinically proven to dilate peripheral and coronary blood vessels, alleviating hypertension and angina.Experimental studies have found that hawthorn works in three important ways: it eases blood flow, lowers blood pressure and strengthens heart muscle. One of the most desirable benefits of hawthorn is that its cardioprotective role may actually escalate when used for a prolonged period of time. In addition, hawthorn has the ability to lower serum cholesterol levels and prevent cholesterol deposits from accumulating in arteries. It is an extremely valuable therapeutic agent for the early stages of congestive heart failure and arrhythmias.
