Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
Definition: During the Civil War, mullein was used to treat respiratory infections. It has calming properties and can soothe inflammation. Swollen membranes respond to mullein and it has been used for hay fever, as a sleep aid and has reportedly cured warts.
Applications: Colds, coughs, cramps, ear infections, insomnia, nervousness, respiratory problems, sore joints and pain.
Scientific Updates: Recent laboratory studies have found that the saponins and mucilage contained in mullein enable it to heal and soothe inflammation.143 In addition, testing concluded that mullein can be used as an herbal pain reliever and sleep aid.
Complementary Agents: Marshmallow, slippery elm, horehound, hops, skullcap, valerian root, wood betony, black cohosh, lobelia, melatonin, vitamin C, vitamin E and calcium/magnesium.
