Nettle (Urtica dioica)
Definition: Also known as stinging nettle, this herb grows in water patches along river and stream banks and has been used traditionally by the Chinese as well as western cultures. Extracts of nettle which have had their stinging properties greatly reduced have been used in everything from hair tonics for baldness to respiratory disorders.
Applications: Asthma, ulcers, bronchitis, jaundice, nephritis, hemorrhoids, dysmenorrhea, gout, arthritis, allergic rhinitis and low blood sugar.
Scientific Updates: It is the histamine, acetylcholine and serotonin present in the leaf bristles of this plant which give it a catalyst like action much in the same way that capsicum works. Nettle compounds actually irritate mucus membranes which creates the needed formation of additional protective mucus. Recent studies have used nettle to treat allergic hay fever.
Complementary Agents: Mullein, marshmallow, vitamin E, slippery elm, vitamin C, bioflavonoids and lobelia.
