Pyruvate
Definition:
Pyruvate is a naturally occuring compound that is the result of carbohydrate metabolism in the body. Technically, pyruvate is really a combination of highly unstable pyruvic acid and other substances like calcium, sodium or potassium, added to stabilize pyruvic acid. This relatively new compound is thought to enhance fat burning, boost endurance, increase lean muscle mass, decrease blood glucose and lower blood cholesterol. Pyruvate is found in some cheeses and other foods but is normally consumed in very small amounts.
Applications:
Weight loss, endurance, muscle building, cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, diabetes and high cholesterol.
Recommendations:
Pyruvate can be found in capsule, powder or drink form and is often combined with other compounds that enhance weight loss or build muscle. Calcium, magnesium and zinc pyruvate are the most common types. Sodium pyruvate is not recommended. Pyruvate seems to work synergistically with DHA.
Note:
The exact amount needed to promote weight loss has not been established. Taking too little of this compound may be ineffective.
