What Is Guggul And How Does It Lower Cholesterol
What is High Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fat-like material which is used by the body to make hormones and cell membranes. As it is produced by the body itself, there is no need to take any supplement to produce cholesterol. Actually, excess cholesterol can be dangerous. The clump of fatty deposits created by cholesterol molecules can cause blockage in the blood vessels. If such blockages take place in the heart, it can lead to heart attack, and if this blockage occurs in the brain, it can cause stroke. For these types of hazards, it is essential for us to monitor the cholesterol levels. The symptoms of high cholesterol can not be observed until it creates a blockage in the blood flow, but often it becomes too late because the damage has already been done to our body. Therefore it is recommended to frequently monitor cholesterol levels by conducting a blood test for people above 30 years of age.
How to treat Cholesterol?
If a person's level of cholesterol is at risk of exceeding the permissible limits, physicians always take all necessary measures to keep it under control. Exercise and diet is the safest and easiest way to lower the high cholesterol level. Stay away from foods that are high in fat and cholesterol. Additionally, there are different types of prescribed medicines available to lower cholesterol levels, but they do have their own side effects and are usually taken throughout life.
However, there is an herbal medicine, known as "Guggul", which has been found very effective in lowering high cholesterol levels.
What is Guggul?
Guggul is obtained as a resin from the mukul myrrh tree (Commiphora mukul), which is found in India. In India, it has been used for a long time to treat cases of inflammation, high cholesterol, obesity, hardening of arteries and acne. Guggul is now become very popular in Europe, Japan and USA as a supplement for reducing fat.
How Guggul Helps with High Cholesterol?
Guggul consists of an active ingredient called "guggulsterones". Gugglesterones suppresses functions of one of the receptors (FXR-a bile acid receptor) on the cell's surface. Bile acid is made from cholesterol, and it is essential in digestion of fat. Therefore, taking guggul as a supplement will help to lower high cholesterol levels. It has been proven by a research conducted on mice.
Along with the effects of guggulsterones on digestion of fat, it also affects positively on the endocrine and immune systems. In addition to controlling cholesterol, it has been seen that guggul is effective in arthritis treatment, acne, prevent atherosclerosis and to heal infections. It also enhances energy and metabolism by acting on the thyroid, and even increases the counts of white blood cells!
Why should I take Guggul?
Guggul has been found very effective in different body system including high cholesterol, and the results are very good. If you are suffering from high blood pressure or you have high cholesterol level, then it should worth a try. But before using this herb, you should consult a practitioner experienced in using natural medicine.
What are the Side Effects of taking Guggul?
Taking guggul can cause upset in stomach. Other likely side effects are diarrhea, nausea and headache.
· If you have inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) or liver disease, then you should not take guggul.
· It should not be taken just after surgery, because it may enhance the risk of bleeding. You should stop taking guggul at least two weeks before a surgery.
