Vitamin D-3 is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be obtained from food sources or produced by the body when skin is exposed to sunlight. Unfortunately, many people don't get enough vitamin D-3 from either source. This can lead to deficiency, which can put people at risk for a number of health problems including osteoporosis*, heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. That's why it's so important to make sure you are getting enough vitamin D-3. Here are some of the ways you can do that: 1. Spend time outside in the sun every day: Just 10-15 minutes of sun exposure each day can help your body produce the vitamin D-3 it needs. Be sure to expose as much skin as possible without wearing sunscreen, as sunscreen will block the ultraviolet B (UVB) rays needed for vitamin D production. 2. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin D-3: Foods such as fatty fish (e.g., salmon, tuna, mackerel), eggs, beef liver, cheese, and fortified milk and cereals all contain high levels of vitamin D-3. 3. Take a supplement: If you don't feel like you're getting enough vitamin D from food or sun exposure, talk to your doctor about taking a supplement. This is especially important for people who are over the age of 60, as they tend to absorb less vitamin D from food than younger people do.
