What is Lutein?

Lutein is a pigment produced by plants. It's classified as a carotenoid, which are compounds that have vitamin A activity and are found in yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables. Lutein is also present in green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale. In addition to its presence in fruits and vegetables, lutein is also found in the macula, a specialized area of the eye that's responsible for central vision. Lutein is important for protecting the eye from ultraviolet light-induced damage.*
