Some advocates call it the fountain of youth. Known as the mother of hormones, DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is needed by the body to produce many types of hormones including estrogen and testosterone. DHEA is secreted by the adrenal glands (located on top of the kidneys) as well as by the skin, brain, testicles, and ovaries. Although women make less DHEA than men, in both sexes DHEA production declines dramatically with age; levels are 80% lower at age 70 than at age 30. There has been plenty of hype surrounding DHEA, so it is difficult to separate wishful thinking from sound scientific evidence. DHEA has been said to stimulate weight loss, increase libido, enhance memory, and prevent osteoporosis, but these claims are unsupported. Studies do indicate, however, that DHEA may improve general well-being in older people (although just how isn’t clear), reduce the risk of heart disease, ease symptoms of the autoimmune disease lupus, help manage diabetes, and bolster immunity, among other things. *Helps maintain fat-free mass *Increases muscle strength *Supports cellular energy levels & metabolism *Works as a testosterone precursor *Is an important anti-aging supplement *Replace declining DHEA levels *May help decrease cholesterol levels *Has major antioxidant properties *May help to maintain youth & health DHEA Has a Significant Impact on Lean Body Mass. It is the most abundant adrenal steroid hormone found in the body. This vital hormone is the metabolic precursor to testosterone and supports muscle growth, cellular energy formation and fat metabolism. DHEA is a catalyst for healthier, leaner eating habits, while blocking the catabolic effects that cortisol has on muscle mass. DHEA may have a profound influence on positive body composition supporting the growth of lean muscle tissue. Many bodybuilders use DHEA to ensure their bodies have the raw ingredients needed to produce sufficient testosterone, the muscle-building hormone. DHEA has Powerful Anti-Aging Benefits. DHEA is essential for well-being and is considered to have strong anti-aging properties. It is a potent antioxidant hormone whose rapid decline after age 30 triggers many degenerative diseases associated with aging. DHEA is considered to be absolutely essential for any anti-aging, longevity program. DHEA levels peak around age 25 for men and 20 for women, and then decline steadily with age. Studies show that DHEA supplementation can potentially slow the aging process, improve testosterone levels and support lean body mass and muscle strength. DHEA May Help Relieve Pain Caused by Rheumatoid Arthritis. DHEA may help to relieve pain and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis and may be helpful in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. DHEA in high doses appear to lead to significant improvement in decreasing symptoms of numbness and spasticity in multiple sclerosis patients. DHEA May Relieve Depression. Recent double-blind clinical studies show that our decreasing levels of DHEA associated with aging is a fundamental contributor to depression among both men and women over the age of 40. This fascinating study demonstrates we are just beginning to learn of the extensive anti-aging benefits associated with DHEA in particular and hormone supplementation in general. Supplementing with DHEA may play some role in protecting against depression. Low DHEA levels have been reported in older women suffering from this condition. After six months using 50 mg DHEA per day, "a remarkable increase in perceived physical and psychological well-being" was reported in both men and women in one double-blind trial. In another double-blind trial, after only six weeks of taking DHEA at levels up to 90 mg per day, at least a 50% reduction in depression was seen in 5 of 11 participants. Other researchers have reported dramatic reductions in depression at extremely high amounts of DHEA (90-450 mg per day) given for six weeks to adults who first became depressed after age 40 (in men) or at the time of menopause (in women) in a double-blind trial.
