How Melatonin Can Support a Healthy Sleep Cycle and More
May 11, 2022 12:19 PM
Did you know that melatonin is a powerful free radical scavenger? This Means that it helps protect the body from damage caused by harmful molecules called radicals. Melatonin is also naturally produced in the pineal gland and is present in high amounts in the GI tract. We will discuss some of the ways that melatonin supports health and wellness.
Melatonin and the body
Melatonin is a hormone that is produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It is responsible for regulating the body's internal clock, or circadian rhythm. The production of melatonin increases at night, and decreases during the day. This hormone is also available in supplement form, and is often used to treat jet lag or insomnia. When taken as a supplement, melatonin works by resetting the body's internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Additionally, melatonin may also help to reduce anxiety and improve mood. As a result, this hormone plays an important role in regulating the body's sleep-wake cycle.
How does melatonin support a healthy sleep cycle?
Melatonin is a hormone that help regulate the sleep cycle. The production of melatonin is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light. As a result, melatonin levels typically start to rise in the evening as the sun sets, and they remain high throughout the night. In the morning, light exposure causes melatonin levels to drop, helping to wake us up and start the day. Melatonin supplements can be used to help people who have difficulty sleeping and staying asleep. This hormone helps to reset the body's natural sleep cycle, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. As a result, melatonin can be an effective way to support a healthy sleep cycle.
What are some of the other benefits of melatonin?
It can help to boost the immune system, protect against cancer, and reduce inflammation. Research suggests that melatonin may also have neuroprotective effects and could be beneficial for people with Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease.
Tips for getting a good night's sleep
Most people need about seven to eight hours of sleep a day. However, many people find it difficult to get enough rest. There are a number of things you can do to improve your sleep habits. First, create a regular sleep schedule and stick to it as much as possible. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends. Second, create a relaxing bedtime routine. This might include taking a warm shower, reading a book, or writing in a journal. Third, create a comfortable sleep environment by making sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool. Fourth, avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed. Caffeine can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, while alcohol can disrupt your sleep cycle. Finally, try not to use electronic devices in bed. The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with your body's natural sleep rhythm and take melatonin. By following these tips, you can improve your chances of getting a good night's sleep.
Research on melatonin began in the 1950s, and since then, numerous studies have been conducted on its potential health benefits. Some of the most promising research has found that melatonin may help to prevent cancer. In one study, melatonin supplements were found to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence by half. Other research has shown that melatonin may help to protect against colon cancer, prostate cancer, and ovarian cancer. Additionally, melatonin has been shown to boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy.
While more research is needed to confirm the exact role of melatonin in cancer prevention, the available evidence suggests that it could play a significant role in protecting against this disease. Therefore, it may be worth considering supplementing with melatonin if you are at high risk for cancer or are undergoing treatment for this disease.

Omega-3s are a potent way to treat depression without resorting todangerous prescription medications
May 17, 2019 04:01 PM
One can treat poor mood and depression without using pharmaceutical drugs. One of these approaches involves using omega-3 fatty acid. Foods rich in this fatty acid can help. It has been shown by many scientific studies that the risk of having depression is reduced when one takes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acid. Some of the means that have been identified as the pathways in which omega-3 fatty acids work is that they can make the CNS to release more serotonin, they can reduce the risk of an inflammation and also its severity, and they can stop phosphatidyl-inositol from releasing hormones that make a person to have depressive moods. The way omega-3 fatty acids do this has been found to be similar to the way anti-depressant drugs work. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to counter the release of serotonin in the brain that trigger depressive moods and they also have effect on the release of cytokines in the heart that relates to lowering the risk of one having coronary heart disease. And fortunately, heart disease is linked to major depressive moods. So, omega-3 fatty acid is a powerful compound that can be used to treat both problems. But what researchers have not agreed upon though is the required dosage of omega-3 fatty acid that a person should take each day to reap these benefits.
"The fatty acids achieve their natural antidepressant effects through several means. Omega-3s can raise the activity of CNS seratonin, reduce the risk and severity of inflammation, and stop phosphatidyl-inositol from sending signals that bring about depressive moods."

Curcumin found to be one of the best natural ways to alleviatedepression
May 15, 2019 02:07 PM
Curcumin has been known to be a silver bullet. It can be used to cure a host of diseases and conditions including cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer’s, and cancer. Now depression can be added to the list according to new research. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) notes that depression affects 16 million Americans every year. Although treatment for it is available, it usually comes with adverse effects. Therefore, there is compelling need for a safer means of treating people. Before this study, it has already been found from multiple studies that curcumin can have an effect on depressive conditions. It was reported to be well tolerated by patients with no adverse side effects. For their current study in Australia, the researchers looked at twenty years of data including current studies on curcumin. They then studied about 342 patients using curcumin and a placebo. From their results, there was a significant reduction in depression after treatment with curcumin compared with the placebo after six weeks of treatment. The researchers then concluded that compelling evidence exists for the use of curcumin in treatment of depression.
"The study also found that curcumin exhibited significant anti-anxiety properties, based on data from 377 patients."

For the men: Multivitamins can keep heart disease at bay
May 09, 2019 09:51 AM
When one gets insufficient nutrients from the diet, taking multivitamins can be a healthy way to improve this. A recent study has shown that men who take multivitamins a lot are less prone to diseases related to the heart such as stroke and even death related to cardiovascular diseases. But how can cardiovascular diseases be prevented using multivitamins? There are few studies in this direction although a lot of studies have been done on the health benefits of multivitamins. That is why a team of researchers in the US embarked on a study of the incidence of multivitamin usage on major cardiovascular diseases like stroke, heart attack, and cardiovascular death. The study was a long term prospective study. The study was conducted between 1982 and 1995 using 18,530 healthy men that were aged from 40 years and above who the researchers followed. The participants reported their lifestyle habits and as well as their intake of certain foods. Throughout the follow up study, there were only 1,697 reported cases of cardiovascular diseases. This made the researchers to conclude that taking multivitamins means a reduced risk to cardiovascular diseases. It is then appropriate for one to choose the right kind of supplements to improve the diet.
"In conducting the study, the research team followed 18,530 healthy men aged 40 years old or over from 1982 to 1995. The participants were initially enrolled from the Physicians’ Health Study I cohort"

Oolong tea inhibits the growth and progression of breast cancer cells
May 08, 2019 03:07 PM
Many persons drink tea for relaxation, stress relief, and to get a caffeine fix but little do they know that drinking tea can help to inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells. Some researchers in both America and China who worked together have found that drinking tea can lead to DNA damage in the cells of breast cancer. Since this tea can be used to prevent also the progression of a tumor, it is hoped that one day they can be a non-toxic means to prevent the growth of breast cancer. In the USA alone, about 250,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and about 41,000 are expected to die from the disease. Although there are improvements in the screening for breast cancer, and in treatment, it is noted that more needs to be done to help women. The researchers discovered that tea has long been used in medicinal treatment in China for centuries and reckoned that black tea is used more often than green tea and oolong tea. And although the benefits of green tea in treating cancer has long been known, the use of oolong tea for cancer is not known, so the researchers sought out this tea in their experiment. Using patients from Fujian, China, where oolong tea is grown mainly, they found out that there was a lower incidence of cancer among people who take oolong tea.
"Like black and green teas, oolong tea contains several vitamins, minerals, and helpful antioxidants."

Eat (or drink) your vegetables: Make smoothies to maximize the lutein in spinach
May 06, 2019 03:40 PM
Spinach, one of the healthiest vegetables available, and it contains a high amount of lutein. The best way to get this lutein is to blend it in a smoothie or add it to a green juice. Because lutein is fat-soluble and stored in the immune cells, the researchers for this study were looking for ways to boost lutein levels in the blood and take advantage of its many health benefits. The research team that came from Sweden used Spinach to understand this process and they processed spinach in various ways, examining various heating and steaming methods to best bolster lutein content in spinach. They found that heating makes spinach to lose its lutein content and the more it is boiled, the more lutein that is lost. They found that the best way to consume spinach to preserve its lutein content is to take it cold. Therefore that is why adding spinach to smoothies is recommended for maximum consumption of lutein in spinach.
"There are many different ways of preparing spinach, but a recent study suggests that blending it in a smoothie or adding it to your green juice is the best way to maximize its lutein content."

How Can Cannabis Help with Autoimmune Disorders?
May 02, 2019 01:59 PM
Autoimmune diseases affect nearly 50 million people living in the United States. These diseases can lead to either over-activation, where antibodies may attack otherwise healthy organs, or under-activation, where not enough antibodies are produced to effectively fight off diseases. Using cannabis may be an alternative means of dealing with autoimmune disorders. Cannabinoids have been shown to be able to bind to receptors within the body which appears to be a possible therapeutic key. Studies with hepatitis, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, Crohn's disease, and Multiple Sclerosis have shown cannabis to provide some relief. However, there are some risk of discomfort from side-effects that could occur with using cannabis to treat autoimmune diseases.
"In cases of over-activation, the immune system produces antibodies in response to an unknown trigger that attacks the body's own tissues and organs."

Why Fibre: The One Effective Macronutrient For Constipation AndWeight Loss
April 25, 2019 04:31 PM
Fiber is a critical macronutrient that can help to alleviate constipation by increasing the size and weight of the stool. However, consuming too much fiber can cause discomfort, gas and bloating. The recommended daily intake of fiber for adults is 25 grams for women and 35 grams for men. Unfortunately, most people take in only about 15 grams of fiber per day. It's important to drink plenty of water so that the body can absorb fiber properly without any negative effects. While fiber is not a magic pill, it can aid in weight loss by eliminating toxins, boosting gut health, and balancing blood sugar.

Another study finds turmeric and curcumin to be a safe, effectivetreatment for lowering cholesterol and protecting the heart
November 19, 2018 09:36 AM
Turmeric and its much-lauded, health-giving component, curcumin, have had a health buzz about them for a long time. The health benefits to those that use turmeric and consequently curcumin, have long been noted. But, though its benefits for a wide array of bodily systems, including the cardiovascular, are not disputed, it has heretofore not been understood if turmeric, or more specifically curcumin, does some of its wonders by lowering lipid levels. The Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University has now performed a meta-analysis of available data, surrounding turmeric and curcumin, as a Means of filling the knowledge gap. The researchers began by filtering the data, searching for studies revolving around turmeric, cholesterol and triglycerides. To ensure the data was all the more compelling and germane, the researchers trimmed down the parameters even more, allowing for only those tests that involved subjects laboring under the effects of metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes. In these cases possible negative effects to the heart would prove particularly relevant. The meta-analysis revealed that turmeric and curcumin had positive effects to impart on the levels of serum triglycerides apparent in its user-subjects. The two components also positively impacted the low-density lipo-protein cholesterol levels of the user-subjects. The researchers theorized that positive chemical activity was initiated by the components, thereby causing the beneficial aspects. Other cholesterol and lipid markers were not affected. In general, turmeric and curcumin have been shown to limit oxidative stress and inflammation as well as benefit the blood vessel lining, all of which can prevent a serious cardiac event.
"Turmeric and curcumin are two substances most known for their wide array of health benefits."

Why does losing weight get harder with age?
August 18, 2018 09:53 AM
Many find it harder to drop the extra pounds later in life, and science is now backing up this theory with medical evidence that point to it being true. Each year that we grow older, our metabolism drops by approximately 1%. This means that the amount of calories we burn drops by this same amount. We also tend to store more white fat as opposed to brown fat. White fat is known to store more fat cells, while brown fat helps promote an increase in heart rate and other beneficial functions.
"Well, there are a couple things working against you. One, you’re most likely not burning as many calories as you did when you were in your 20s."

August 17, 2018 03:53 PM
Summer is here, and that means that mosquitoes are out and multiplying at full swing. Fortunately, there are some safe and natural ways to fend off these pesky insects while you're enjoying the warm weather. If you're going to be at a campsite, it is best to opt in for jeans as long as you don't think you'll overheat. Mosquitoes can't bite through thick denim like they can other materials, so this alone should prevent them from breaking through.
"This great invention is not only meant to be used when traveling. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of these nets for covering cribs, strollers, and baby carriers. Some even use it inside their own bedrooms. The experiment used a powder of Acai that had been freeze dried and ground up, and then simulated the digestive environment.
