Subject: The nutritional content and health benefits of pecans and walnuts

Walnuts and pecans are both healthy snacks with lots of benefits. Walnuts have more fat and more protein, while pecans have more fiber and more natural sugars. The fat in both pecans and walnuts consists predominantly of healthy fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as omega-3s. Both pecans and walnuts are good for brain health and rich in antioxidants. Their polyphenols help to protect the brain, while their healthy fats help to safeguard the heart and prevent atherosclerosis.

Key Takeaways:

  • Pecans and walnuts might have differences in looks and taste, but they are very well regarded for their healthiness and great tastes.
  • When one takes a serving of walnuts, he discovers that it contains more calories than an equal serving of pecans and this extra energy is stored in fats.
  • The fats in walnuts are usually good fats which consist mostly of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, along with omega-3 fatty acids.

"Walnuts have the B vitamins choline and niacin, while pecans show tiny amounts of vitamin A."

Subject: New findings show mushrooms protect brain health

The culinary world loves mushrooms because they have rich flavors but yet they are packed with high amount of nutrition and possess antioxidant and anti-inflammation properties. But new findings show that mushrooms can even provide much more. They have been shown to help in brain health. The research highlighted in this blog shows that when people eat mushrooms they have reduced risk of a mild cognitive impairment that precedes Alzheimer’s disease. The study was conducted in the National University of Singapore and used 600 human subjects who were given various types of mushrooms such as dried mushrooms, white button mushrooms, and golden mushrooms. The researchers found at the end of the study that participants who had consumed mushrooms had reduced cognitive decline especially if they take two or more servings of mushrooms each week as seniors. Other benefits of mushrooms beyond brain health are that it helps prevent cancer, improves the immune function, reduces weight, and is a healthy source of vitamin D.

Key Takeaways:

  • Although mushrooms are loved by those who cook for their rich flavor, it goes beyond that because it is also a nutritional powerhouse.
  • New research shows that mushrooms can boost brain health because it has been understood that eating mushrooms reduces risk of mild cognitive impairment.
  • The study was conducted at the National University of Singapore using about 600 people who were given different types of mushrooms to consume.

"Beyond the new findings that show mushrooms may boost brain health and lower the risk for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease, mushrooms offer other significant health benefits, too."

Subject: 4 reasons you should eat more mushrooms

Mushrooms are a nutritious food with many health benefits. Mushrooms can provide one of the few completely vegan foods with lots of vitamin D, although that is only if they’re exposed to sunlight and not grown in the dark. They’ve got tons of fiber, and are also full of niacin, phosphorus and other minerals. Evidence to support claims that mushrooms help prevent specific diseases is weak, but what is definitely clear is that sautéed mushrooms are delicious, and there’s no reason not to eat them.

Key Takeaways:

  • People revere magical mushrooms, but all mushrooms have amazing abilities that helps the body when it comes to healthy living and healing abilities.
  • Vitamin D supplements apart from that from sunshine only come from animals such as fatty fishes and dairy products fortified with the vitamin.
  • It is known that the amazing mushroom produces vitamin D abundantly such that a 100-gram serving can give one about 50 to 100 percent of the daily dose.

"You only need 10 to 15 minutes of sunshine three times a week to get your necessary dose of vitamin D, but if you’re still running low you can supplement with food sources."

Subject: Men, here's a diet plan for a better memory: leafy greens, darkorange and red vegetables, berries, and a glass of OJ

According to a recent Harvard University study, the optimal diet for men who want to maintain strong cognitive health consists of eating leafy green vegetables, berries, orange and red vegetables, and orange juice. Researcher Changzheng Yuan studied 28,000 men over the course of 20 years, tracking their dietary habits and periodically testing their cognitive skills. The group that consumed the most vegetables, about six servings per day, performed better on thinking skills tests than the group that ate half that. There was also a positive association found between eating fruits and overall brain health.

Key Takeaways:

  • One study, centering on cognition, set out to track nearly 3000 men for two decades.
  • All the study participants were human adult, male professionals in the health field.
  • Every participant was questioned about specific food usage upon their entry and at four year intervals thereafter.

"Yuan noted that participants who ate all these fruits and vegetables at the start of the study – 20 years ago – enjoyed better cognitive and memory skills."

Subject: Cranberries improve oral health, study concludes

According to a study in Nutrition Research, cranberries can contribute to overall oral health by fighting the inflammation caused by gingivitis. If gingivitis goes untreated, it can lead to gum disease and periodontitis. In adults, both periodontitis and gingivitis can lead to tooth loss. To prevent these conditions, experts recommend consuming 750 ml of a cranberry functional beverage daily. Furthermore, according to a study in the European Journal of Oral Sciences, eating a serving of cranberries and blueberries daily can protect your teeth against S. mutans, a bacterial strand responsible for tooth decay.

Key Takeaways:

  • Although cranberries, Vaccinium macrocarpon, are usually eating during Thanksgiving, one should make it a habit to take them regularly due to its health benefits.
  • It has been discovered that cranberries are especially good for oral health. A new study found that it can help fight inflammation due to gingivitis.
  • Gingivitis is caused by the inflammation of the gums due to the buildup of bacteria that form plaque. If left untreated, it develops to periodontitis.

"The study, which was published in the journal Nutrition Research, suggests that cranberries consumed as a functional drink can be used as a safe and natural treatment for gingivitis."

Subject: Pistachios: Discover 7 reasons to eat this delicious nut

Tree nuts can be a great addition to a healthy diet, and there is no better example of this than the pistachio. Pistachios are rich in antioxidants that help fight against aging, cancer and inflammation. Eating pistachios can also improve your blood pressure and blood glucose levels. They're a good source or protein, fiber and healthy fats. In fact, snacking on pistachios can actually help you lose weight because they make you feel full. Note that one serving of pistachios is about one ounce of unshelled nuts, which is just under 50 kernels. How you eat them (alone or added to salads, rice, desserts, etc.) and buy them (pre-shelled vs. shelling them yourself) is up to you.

Key Takeaways:

  • Pistachios are named after the Greek name and these are one of the most nutrient dense nuts around the world which provide a source of protein, antioxidants, and fiber.
  • A diet that is rich in healthy fats like oleic acid and linoleic acid can reduce inflammation and make the risk of having heart disease lesser.
  • In 7000 BC, history has it that pistachio was famous among royalty because the Queen of Sheba named it an exclusive royal delicacy.

"They’re super gut healthy and can increase the number of bacteria which produce the anti-inflammatory fatty acid called butyrate (which protects against everything from obesity to autoimmune disorders)."

Subject: Plant proteins found to help prevent Type 2 diabetes

A recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition analyzed the diets of more than 2,000 men. It specifically sought to find a correlation between protein sources and diabetes. It found that, in general, men with a higher intake of protein from plants were less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. Conversely, men who got most of their protein from processed or unprocessed meats were more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. Several other studies from Harvard have reached parallel conclusions.

Key Takeaways:

  • Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland looked at the dietary habits of 2000 men to try to learn the impact of protein sources on heart health.
  • Plant-based diets are associated with significant drops in the risk of Type 2 diabetes, even when subjects also are less healthy foods as well.
  • One serving of red meat per day is enough to substantially raise the risk of type 2 diabetes relative to non-meat eaters.

"According to the study, men who had the highest intake of plant proteins were 35 percent less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes compared with those who had the lowest consumption."

What's The Difference Between Niacin And Niacinamide
TopPreviousNext

Date: December 19, 2018 08:31 AM
Author: Darrell Miller (support@vitanetonline.com)
Subject: What's The Difference Between Niacin And Niacinamide

When it comes to Vitamin B3, not all forms of Niacin are created equally. Aside from the risk of allergens and impurities, there are also separate forms with critical distinctions. The pure form is made solely of nicotinic acid which causes the flushing effect when it is taken by humans. The flushing effect is a redness that starts in the face and expands outwards through the rest of the body. It can make the skin feel warm, dry, and itchy for half an hour. The flushing effect is associated with vascular dilation that helps open up the tiny capillaries and blood vessels to clean out all the toxic junk they may have accumulated.

Nicotinic Acid Lowers Cholesterol

Nicotinic acid is also associated with increasing HDL levels in the body to prevent heart disease and plaques from accumulating on the interior walls of arteries. Nicotinic acid is also known to lower the LDL and VLDL bad cholesterols that clog up arteries and lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Other Benefits of Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3 plays a critical role in building enzymes that help us carry out over 200 physical functions in the body. It is not produced naturally but is absorbed from foods such as yeast, green vegetables, milk, eggs, legumes, and fish. Aside from cardiovascular health, it plays a critical role in nervous health and sex hormone production.

How Does Niacinamide Differ?

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of Niacin that is used to treat deficiencies or for therapies when patients need to take higher doses regularly to treat pellegra and the deficiencies that lead to it. When an excess of Niacin is built up in the body, your body may store it in this form. The chief distinction between this water-soluable hybrid and nicotinic acid is the effect on cholesterol and vascular dilation. Although flushing can be reduced by taking nicotinic acid daily and building up a tolerance to the effects, it is harder on the liver and more burdensome on the body to metabolize it in the high doses used for therapy of many illnesses: ADHD, Schizophrenia, nervous problems, migraines, and arthritis, among others. It is the preferred choice for maintaining a consistent and steady level of Vitamin B3 in the body and loaded into many beauty and skin products for women.

What Other Forms Can I Take?

You can take any form of the vitamin on a daily basis or supplement it with nicotinic acid when you need some additional flushing effect. You will notice that Niacinamide causes some symptoms of drying and itching that are similar to flushing when you take it in high doses. The no-flush formulation is called inositol hexanicotinate and made up from Vitamins B3 and Inositol Vitamin B8. The inositol acts as an additional buffer that makes inositol hexanicotinate easy to digest and take 1600 mg without side-effects: nausea, itching, flushing, dizziness, gout, liver damage, diabetes. Although multi-vitamin formulas and even fortified foods like breakfast shakes and cereals suggest that you are getting a full dose of B3 in each Serving, this is very unlikely. The better choice is to take specifically formulated capsules rather than multivitamins if you are using it for therapeutic reasons.

With the rise of fast food restaurants, fruits and greens consumption has been on the decline. Some studies have linked Alzheimer disease to the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet over time. Taking Barley grass can help you get more greens in your diet. If you do not get at least 2 Servings of fresh fruit, consider taking either Barley grass or a fruit and veggie combination daily to help maintain good health.

19 Natural Diuretics to Help Relieve Water Retention, Bloating & More

When someone is suffering from liver disease or other ailments such as diabetes, they are often prescribed diuertics in order to help the flow of liquids throughout their system. Unfortunately, these pharaceutical interventions can often come with a plethora of unwanted side effects such as dizziness and headaches. There is, however, a much less invasive solution. Many foods and herbs act as natural diuretics such as juniper berries and dandelion. Their consumption ends up leading to much less unwanted side effects while delivering the same potent results.

Key Takeaways:

  • Diuretics are often used by patients who are facing liver disease, or for those suffering from diabetic symptoms.
  • Although diuretics are quite successful in the benefits that they promote, they also can come with unwanted side effects such as dizziness.
  • Natural diuretics such as juniper berry and hibiscus can give you the same flushing benefits without the adverse side effects.

"Whether you’re looking to flush out water weight or keep kidney stones at bay, including a few servings of natural diuretics in your diet may be just what you need."

5 reasons why you should start eating mushrooms

The consumption of mushrooms leads to several health benefits, many of which are fast-acting and highly prominent. For instance, one serving of mushrooms contains over three grams of fiber which leads to the production of insulin. For those who are insulin resistant or diabetic, this may be a good way to naturally aid in increasing the presence of insulin as long as their doctor approves it. The Vitamin C and potassium within mushrooms also helps promote optimal heart health.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mushrooms contain approximately three grams of fiber per serving which can help increase insulin levels.
  • The Vitamin C and Potassium in mushrooms are vital ingredients to maintaining proper cardiovascular health.
  • Since mushrooms are low-calorie and low in fat, they naturally aid in increased weight loss.

"Mushrooms also contain selenium which has also been found to improve immune response to infection by stimulating the production of killer T-cells. The beta-glucan fibres found in the cell walls of mushrooms stimulate the immune system to fight diseases."

New research out of Chicago's Rush University Medical Center have shown positive links between a daily serving of green, leafy vegetables and a cognitive function. This functional slip may even be slowed by eleven years due to green, leafy vegetables. The study lasted almost five years, and helped demonstrate this hypothesis. Most importantly, none of the participants showed signs of dementia before the study, so their cognitive function was still high before the study even if the average age was 81.

Key Takeaways:

  • Eating just 1 serving of leafy green vegetables a day can help preserve memory and thinking skills.
  • The study was conducted over 4.7 years with participants aged 81 years old with no dementia
  • Although all participants had a decline in brain functioning, those who ate the most leafy vegetables saw the least decline-0.05 standardized units slower than participants who ate less greens

Could you be pressured into submitting to genetic testing in the near future? A proposed piece of legislation could alter the 2008 law that protects us from mandatory genetic testing and or discrimination based on the results of such tests. The proposed changes get around the 2008 law by linking predictive tests to wellness programming and declaring wellness programs exempt from the prior rules. Bioethics experts believe that your genetic health Is nobody’s business and others point out that wellness programs have failed to produce proven results or savings.

Key Takeaways:

  • The "Preserving Employee Wellness Programs Act" could eliminate patients' privacy protection that were established in 2008 under the Genetic Information Non Discrimination Act.
  • The new bill could make genetic test information available to employers as part of a wellness program.

Consuming healthful levels of magnesium has been linked to disease prevention, reducing the risks of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. While it is estimated that many Americans are magnesium deficient, supplementation with magnesium is discouraged without advice from a health care provider. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and that means calories, carbs, and fats galore. But there are some easy ways to make your Thanksgiving spread a little bit healthier for you and your family. Watch your Serving sizes, eat slowly, and maybe even get some Holiday exercise, and you might just be able to keep this year's Thanksgiving dinner from ruining your waistline.

Key Takeaways:

  • My advice is to do everything in moderation. Normally, people scoop up mounds of stuff on their plate, and that's where it gets to be a problem.
  • And just because you are going to indulge during that one meal of the day doesn't mean that you have to blow the others.
  • An hour spent clearing and washing dishes will burn about 100 calories. Another hour of mopping up after the big meal can burn more than 100. Cleanup could be the cure for green bean casserole.

"Normally, people scoop up mounds of stuff on their plate, and that's where it gets to be a problem. But if you can handle small portion sizes, then that's fine," said Sara Haas, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics."

Subject: Too Much Salt for Our Kids

Cardiovascular disease kills over 800,000 Americans each year, and high salt intake is a major culprit. Yet American children are having far more salt than the daily recommended limit – which puts them at increased risk of heart disease later in life. Feed your kids fresh fruits and vegetables without added sodium or sauces. Read nutrition labels and buy low sodium food.

Key Takeaways:

  • American children are consuming sodium at levels that far exceed the daily-recommended limit, which will put them at increased risk for developing cardiovascular problems later in life.
  • Sodium reduction is considered a key public health strategy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases nationwide and this study is the latest in ongoing CDC efforts to monitor U.S. sodium intake
  • According to the CDC, average sodium intake for kids was 3,256 milligrams per day, 50 to 60% above recommended depending on age.

"An easy way to assess sodium in a food is to focus on the amount of sodium per Serving. Those foods with less than 140 mg per Serving are considered low in sodium."

Our bodies undergo many changes when we age. Once potentially problematic change is that our bodies take longer to heal when we are older. This phenomenon has been observed since WWI. Recent studies at Rockefeller University have focused on obServing young and elderly mice to determine why this happens. It has been discovered that our immune cells stop communicating effectively in old age, which leads to them not doing their jobs as quickly as when we are young.

Key Takeaways:

  • Yet until now, researchers have not been able to tease out what age-related changes hinder the body's ability to repair itself.
  • Both skin cells and immune cells contribute to this elaborate process, which begins with the formation of a scab.
  • The scientists hope the same principle could be applied to developing treatments for age-related delays in healing.

"Recent experiments at The Rockefeller University explored this physiological puzzle by examining molecular changes in aging mouse skin."

Importance of Antioxidants and How Can We Get Them from Various Foods

Subject: Importance of Antioxidants and How Can We Get Them from Various Foods

Antioxidants, also known as anti-oxidation agents, are nutrients that help reduce the harmful effects of oxidants in the body. We all know that our body cells need oxygen for energy and growth. As our body cells use oxygen to create energy and sustain life, free radicals are released in the process as a byproduct. Antioxidants help combat the damage caused by oxidation.

If you have ever left a slice of apple in open air, you must have seen that after some time the flesh of the fruit turns brown. This is a result of oxidation. However, if you apply a little lemon juice on the slice, and then leave it in open air, the apple slice will remain white. This is because of the antioxidant present in lemon juice. Similarly, the antioxidants present in the food we consume do the same thing, neutralizes the free radicals, and thus keeps our cells protected. Studies have proven that people who consume antioxidant-rich food are at lower risk of developing many diseases, including cancer. Thus, it is very important for you to include these important nutrients in your everyday diet.

Foods Rich in Antioxidants

These important nutrients exist in many foods, and you can easily get them through a well-balanced diet. Nutrients having antioxidant benefits include vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, beta-carotene, and manganese. A large group of phytochemicals also works as antioxidants.

  • Vitamin C

One of the richest sources of vitamin C is sweet red peppers, and one single cup of these peppers can provide you 190 mg or 200 percent of your required daily intake. You can enjoy 100 percent of your daily intake from a single cup of green peppers, orange juice, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli. One cup Serving of cauliflower, cantaloupe, tomatoes, grapefruit, blackberries, and raspberries offers 32 percent of women’s and 25 percent of men’s suggested daily intake.

  • Vitamin E

The richest source of vitamin E includes hazelnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, pinto beans, peanuts, and vegetable oils like canola, corn, and safflower oil. 1 cup of cooked beans, 1-tablespoon vegetable oil and a one-ounce Serving of seeds and nuts, offers 2 – 7 mg of vitamin E. These make 13 to 47 percent of your suggested daily intake. Certain vitamin C rich foods also fulfill 10 percent of your daily-required intake of vitamin E including blackberries, raspberries, broccoli, tomatoes, and sweet peppers.

  • Phytochemicals

Phytochemical antioxidants like carotenoids, resveratrol, and flavonoids can easily be identified because of the pigments they offer to the vegetables and fruits, like orange, red, yellow, purple and blue colors. Purple and dark blue fruits include blackberries, blueberries and grapes, and these are rich in resveratrol. Carrots, pumpkin, tomatoes, oranges, and red peppers are rich in carotenoids, which offer them a shade of red, orange, and yellow. Dark greens, particularly leafy greens, are rich sources of antioxidants, but the presence of green chlorophyll hides the other colors.

  • Other sources

Dark chocolates are rich in flavonoids, but to enjoy the benefits you need to opt for those that have cacao solids. Milk chocolates and white chocolates do not offer flavonoids. Wine, tea, and coffee are also sources of flavonoids. You can find selenium in beans, nuts, and animal products like milk, beef, pork, chicken, and fish. The best sources of manganese are nuts, pineapple, beans, sweet potatoes, and brown rice.

Magnesium has been found to be working in other ways to contribute in preServing the nervous system. Before the end of 20th Century, specialized doctors had established that injection of magnesium in our bodies exerts a depressant effect on the nerves. In fact, the main use of this mineral in early times was to induce sleep. Significantly, any hibernating animal have high levels of magnesium. The mineral has also shown effectiveness in control of convulsion in pregnant women, the shakes in alcoholic and epileptic seizure.

MAGNESIUM CALMING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

One of paradoxical effect is that, a magnesium deficient person who end up taking magnesium will feel energetic than never before yet the mineral is not a stimulant but rather a depressant. Actually, magnesium normally relieves the irritability of nervous system and the excessive energy, which will result to fatigue.

With this, it will not be surprising to say that when an individual magnesium levels is sub-normal then the nerves will not be in a position of controlling functions such as muscle movement, mental processes and respiration. Irregular heartbeat, twitching, irritability and largely nervous fatigue are the most frequent symptoms of magnesium depletion.

Often, deficiency of magnesium is because of failure on individual side to obtain to use dietary sources such as eggs, wheat germ, green vegetables, cocoa, almonds, soybeans, desiccated liver among many other. However, in some instances, coexisting illness can impair absorption of this mineral, for example the intestinal infections. In such an instant, ingested magnesium may be lost completely in the body and majorly in the nervous system.

PENN of Columbia University published the information of essential of magnesium to nervous system first in 1966. He studied the conduction of electricity by the nerves.
