The Importance of Collagen for Your Health: Why You Should Care

Have you ever heard about collagen? It might have been a buzzword in the beauty industry, but it's important to know that collagen is much more than just skin-deep. Collagen is actually a protein that plays a crucial role in providing structure, strength, and support to different parts of our bodies such as skin, bones, tendons, and ligaments. Lets explore the importance of collagen for your health, its different types and functions, the effects of collagen loss on the body, factors that affect collagen production, and how to boost collagen levels naturally.

Factors That Affect Collagen Production:

Collagen production declines naturally with aging, leading to visible signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin, and brittle nails. However, several lifestyle factors also contribute to collagen loss like smoking, consuming sugary foods, and excessive sun exposure. Medical conditions like scleroderma and Ehlers-Danlos SYNDROME also lead to reduced collagen production.

The Effects of Collagen Loss on the Body:

Collagen loss can have various detrimental effects on the body. One of the most visible effects is on the skin where collagen loss leads to wrinkles, fine lines, sagging, and dryness. Collagen loss also affects joints, resulting in pain and stiffness. Since collagen is crucial to maintaining bone structure, a decrease in collagen levels weakens the bones and muscles, causing osteoporosis. Collagen is important for the digestive tract lining, so when the body lacks sufficient collagen, people could experience digestive issues.

Lifestyle Habits Leading to Collagen Loss:

Several lifestyle habits exacerbate the natural decline in collagen production, thereby speeding up the aging process and negatively affecting overall health. First among these is smoking. The chemicals present in cigarettes damage collagen and elastin, causing premature skin aging with characteristic wrinkles and sagging. Not only does smoking impact the skin, but it also affects collagen-rich organs and tissues, leading to various health problems.

Next is the consumption of excessive sugar and refined carbohydrates. A high-sugar diet interferes with collagen's ability to repair itself, leading to inflammation and collagen cross-linking that results in skin aging and joint discomfort. Refined carbohydrates spike blood sugar levels, encouraging the same damaging process.

Last but not least, ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, particularly from the sun, can also lead to significant collagen loss. UV light increases collagen breakdown by activating enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases that degrade collagen and elastin. This exposure results in photoaging of the skin, characterized by deep wrinkles, leathery texture, and pigmentation changes. Therefore, it's crucial to protect your skin from the sun by wearing SPF every day, even on cloudy days.

How to Boost Collagen Levels Naturally:

Fortunately, several natural ways can help boost collagen levels in your body. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, zinc, copper, and iron is key to boosting collagen levels. Vitamin C is vital in the production of collagen, which makes it an essential nutrient for the body. Excessive sun exposure and smoking lead to the accumulation of free radicals that damage collagen, so avoiding these is key. In addition, the topical use of skincare products like sunscreen and moisturizers protects and nourishes collagen and helps maintain healthy skin. Exercise such as weight training and yoga can help stimulate collagen synthesis, ensuring youthful-looking skin, healthy joints, and strong bones.

Common types of collagen!

  • Type I Collagen: This is the most abundant type of collagen in the body. It's primarily responsible for providing structure to the skin, tendons, organs, and the bone matrix. It also plays a crucial role in wound healing.
  • Type II Collagen: This type of collagen is primarily found in cartilage and serves as the main component of our joints. It's important for maintaining healthy joint movement and reducing the effects of joint-related aging.
  • Type III Collagen: Often found alongside Type I, Type III collagen supports the structure of muscles, organs, and arteries. It's also a key component in the body's natural healing processes.
  • Type IV Collagen: This type forms the basis of the cell basement membrane and plays a critical role in maintaining cell and tissue health by aiding filtration.
  • Type V Collagen: This type of collagen is found in the surfaces of cells, hair, and placenta. It's important for various cellular processes, including the growth and development of cells and tissues.

Collagen is an essential protein that is vital for overall health and well-being. It provides support and structure to different body parts, ensuring their optimum functionality. The decline in collagen production is an inevitable part of aging, but several natural ways can help boost its levels. Maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding habits that damage collagen, and practicing regular exercise can help maintain healthy collagen levels. It's crucial to remember that relying solely on supplements may not necessarily boost collagen levels, so it's best to consult your healthcare provider before taking them. So, go ahead and adopt healthy habits to maintain healthy levels of this crucial protein. Your body will thank you for it!

Why Your Sodium to Potassium Ratio Is Important

Subject: Why Your Sodium to Potassium Ratio Is Important

The typical Western diet is largely comprised of processed foods, which are notoriously high in processed table salt. This results in an imbalance in the sodium to potassium ratio, a significant health concern. Sodium is necessary for a variety of bodily functions; however, too much can be detrimental, leading to hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Simultaneously, potassium is often neglected, despite its crucial role in muscle function, nerve signaling, and balancing fluids.

The general dietary advice suggests a potassium to sodium intake ratio of 3:1. However, the reality in diets, particularly those in America, often sees this ratio inverted. The excessive sodium consumption is linked to a myriad of health complications, including high blood pressure and heart disease. Conversely, potassium, a mineral that aids in nerve function and muscle control, is consumed in insufficient quantities. This is a troubling trend that underscores the importance of dietary change towards natural, unprocessed foods.

The importance of potassium is often overshadowed by the emphasis on limiting sodium for reducing chronic disease risk factors. Potassium plays an essential role in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels by counteracting the effects of sodium. Furthermore, the mineral is crucial for other functions like heart and muscle cell functioning, nerve transmission, and maintaining fluid balance.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine discovered that individuals with the lowest risk for heart complications or death from any cause were those consuming between four to six grams of sodium per day. This is a fascinating discovery, as this intake is significantly higher than the U.S. daily recommended limits. It suggests a need for a reconsideration of current sodium intake guidelines.

Another consideration to balance the sodium-potassium ratio is the type of salt consumed. Unprocessed, natural salts like sea salt and Himalayan salt contain higher potassium levels compared to standard table salt. These natural salts provide a variety of minerals and trace elements that contribute to our overall health and wellness. It's crucial to note that switching to natural salt should be part of a broader shift towards a diet rich in fresh, unprocessed foods.

Why You Should Focus on Increasing Potassium

While it's beneficial to monitor and moderate sodium intake, it's equally important to shift our focus towards increasing potassium consumption. Potassium-rich foods, such as leafy green vegetables, bananas, potatoes, and beans, not only contribute to a well-rounded and nutritious diet but also help in maintaining an optimal sodium-potassium balance in the body. A high potassium intake can counteract the effects of sodium, aiding in blood pressure regulation and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, an elevated potassium level supports various bodily functions, including nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and fluid balance. Thus, prioritizing potassium intake forms a cornerstone for an overall healthier dietary approach. It is recommended that individuals consume 5 grams of potassium daily and potassium to salt ratio should be 2 to 1. To boost potassium intake, one can take a potassium supplement or add the following foods to their diet or both: Watermelon, Orange juice, Boiled red potatoes, Avocado, Bananas, Cantaloupe, Oranges, Coconut water, Tomatoes, Yogurt, Winter squash, and Wild-caught salmon.

Why Low-Salt Advice Can Be Harmful

Contrary to popular belief, adhering to low-salt advice can sometimes pose risks to certain individuals. While it is true that excessive sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure and heart problems, sodium still plays a vital role in our bodies. It assists in nerve conduction, muscle contraction, and maintaining the body's fluid balance.

In fact, low sodium levels in the body, a condition known as hyponatremia, can lead to symptoms such as headache, nausea, fatigue, and in severe cases, coma or even death. Moreover, a low-salt diet may lead to increased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, hormonal imbalances and insulin resistance. This can potentially elevate the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Low-salt diets can also exacerbate the risk of certain health conditions. For instance, individuals with conditions like Addison's disease or certain kidney disorders, where the body struggles to maintain a balance of electrolytes, might find a low-salt diet harmful.

Therefore, it is crucial to balance the intake of sodium, considering both the potential risks associated with too much, or too little, sodium. The key is to consume sodium from natural and unprocessed sources, such as Himalayan salt, fruits, vegetables, grains, and lean meats, which also provide a host of other nutrients necessary for overall health. As with most things in nutrition, moderation and balance seem to hold the answer rather than extreme restriction. The RDA - recommended daily allowance of sodium is 3.5 grams. It is advised to consume 3.5 grams of natural salt each day by way of foods or combination of foods plus Himalayan salt to reach that goal.

The Impact of Excessive Salt Intake on Certain Health Conditions

While moderate salt intake is vital for normal physiological functions, its excessive consumption can have detrimental effects, particularly for individuals with certain health conditions. For instance, endocrine disorders, high aldosterone levels, Cushing's SYNDROME, and elevated cortisol levels can all heighten the body's sensitivity to sodium, making it even more essential to monitor and limit salt intake.

Endocrine disorders, which involve imbalances in the body's hormone production, can often lead to increased sodium retention, exacerbating issues of water retention and swelling. Similarly, high aldosterone levels, a hormone that regulates sodium and potassium balance, can cause the body to retain excessive sodium, leading to high blood pressure and potential damage to the cardiovascular system.

Cushing's SYNDROME, a condition characterized by excessive cortisol production, can lead to a host of symptoms, including high blood pressure and rapid weight gain, both of which can be intensified by high sodium intake. The excessive cortisol found in Cushing's SYNDROME promotes sodium retention, further elevating the risk for hypertension.

Similarly, elevated cortisol levels, even outside of Cushing's SYNDROME, can lead to heightened sodium retention, contributing to high blood pressure, fluid retention, and an imbalance of electrolytes. Therefore, individuals with these conditions should be particularly mindful of their sodium intake.

In these scenarios, reducing salt consumption can help mitigate the associated health risks and symptoms. Switching to a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods, and taking conscious steps to limit the use of added table salt can play a crucial role in managing these health conditions. As always, it is essential to seek personalized advice from a healthcare professional, as individual needs may vary.

In summary, while salt is often villainized in the health community, its consumption, especially from natural sources, is vital for maintaining bodily functions like nerve conduction, muscle contraction, and fluid balance. However, excessive or inadequate sodium intake can have adverse health effects, such as hypertension, imbalances in cholesterol and triglycerides, and even hyponatremia in severe cases. Certain health conditions, including endocrine disorders, high aldosterone levels, Cushing's SYNDROME, and elevated cortisol levels, can also exacerbate these risks, making it crucial for individuals with these conditions to carefully monitor their salt intake. On the other hand, increasing potassium intake can help maintain an optimal sodium-potassium balance, reducing blood pressure and lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In a nutshell, moderation and balance are key in sodium consumption, but the emphasis should be on consuming more potassium-rich foods to ensure your potassium intake is higher than sodium levels which will ensure a healthier dietary approach.

Vectomega: The Revolutionary Omega-3 Supplement

Author: Darrell Miller (support@vitanetonline.com)
Subject: Vectomega: The Revolutionary Omega-3 Supplement

Do you want to improve your heart health, support brain function, and maintain your overall health? If so, then you need to start taking Vectomega! This revolutionary Omega-3 supplement is unlike any other on the market. Instead of using fish oil, Vectomega uses phospholipids to bind the Omega-3s. This makes them more effectively absorbed by the body and means that you only need to take one tablet a day!* Plus, Vectomega contains peptides which are not found in fish oil or krill oil. These peptides play a vital role in mood, immune system function, focus, and overall health! Don't miss out on this incredible supplement. Start taking Vectomega.

Fish oil is good for the heart, brain, and helps maintain overall health and wellness

Fish oil is a dietary supplement that is derived from fish body tissue. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are considered to be beneficial for the heart, brain, and overall health and wellness. Numerous studies have shown that fish oil can help to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cognitive decline. It has also been shown to be effective in managing diabetes, arthritis, and other chronic conditions.

Vectomega

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for human health, but unfortunately, our bodies cannot produce them on their own. As a result, we must obtain omega-3s through our diet or through supplements. Vectomega is an innovative omega-3 supplement that provides all the benefits of fish oil without the unpleasant taste or risk of fishy burps. Unlike other omega-3 supplements, Vectomega is bound to phospholipids, which enhances absorption. In addition, Vectomega contains fish peptides, which are a natural source of omega-3s. Best of all, Vectomega has zero rancidity, ensuring that you get the freshest possible omega-3s every time you take it. If you're looking for a high-quality omega-3 supplement, look no further than Vectomega.

Brain, Heart, and Eye Health

The human brain is comprised of 60% fat, making omega-3 essential for healthy cognitive function. Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet is notoriously low in omega-3, which can lead to cognitive decline and an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. The good news is that omega-3 supplements can help to improve brain health. One high-quality option is vectomega, which contains a potent form of omega-3 called DHA. DHA has been shown to improve memory and protect against age-related cognitive decline. In addition, vectomega helps to support heart health by reducing inflammation and improving circulation. It can also improve eye health by reducing the risk for macular degeneration and dry eye SYNDROME. Overall, vectomega is an excellent way to support brain, heart, and eye health.

Reduce pain with EPA from fish oil

There are many ways to reduce pain, but one of the most effective is to take fish oil supplements. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to be anti-inflammatory. EPA, or eicosapentaenoic acid, is a type of omega-3 fatty acid that is particularly effective at reducing inflammation. In fact, studies have shown that EPA is more effective than ibuprofen at reducing pain and inflammation. And unlike ibuprofen, fish oil has no side effects. So if you're looking for a natural way to reduce pain and inflammation, fish oil is a great option. Just make sure to choose a high-quality supplement that contains a significant amount of EPA like vectomega.

If you're looking for a high-quality omega-3 supplement, look no further than Vectomega. This revolutionary product provides all the benefits of fish oil without the unpleasant taste or risk of fishy burps. In addition, Vectomega contains peptides which are not found in fish oil or krill oil. These peptides play a vital role in mood, immune system function, focus, and overall health! Don't miss out on this incredible supplement. Start taking Vectomega today!

Subject: The Kidneys and Your Health: Everything You Need to Know

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that sit in the lower back, on either side of the spine. They play a vital role in your health, filtering toxins from the blood and regulating fluid balance in the body. We will discuss everything you need to know about the kidneys, including common kidney problems and how to keep them healthy!

What are the common kidney problems

The kidneys are a pair of organs that filter waste products from the blood and excrete them in urine. They are also responsible for regulating fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. Kidney problems can range from mild to severe, and can be acute or chronic. Common kidney problems include kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and Nephrotic SYNDROME. Kidney stones are small, hard deposits that form in the kidney when there is an imbalance of minerals in the urine. Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria enter the urinary system and multiply. Nephrotic SYNDROME is a kidney disorder that causes the body to excrete large amounts of protein in the urine.Kidney problems can often be treated with medication, but in some cases, surgery may be necessary. Early diagnosis and treatment is important to prevent serious complications.

Acute renal failure

Acute renal failure is a sudden onset of kidney failure that can be life-threatening. The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste from the blood and balancing fluids in the body. When they are not working properly, waste can build up in the blood and cause serious health problems. Acute renal failure can be caused by a number of factors, including dehydration, infection, and certain medications. Symptoms include decreased urine output, swelling, fatigue, and confusion. If left untreated, acute renal failure can lead to coma and death. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for a successful outcome.

Chronic renal failure

Chronic renal failure, or CRF, is a serious medical condition that affects the kidneys. In this condition, the kidneys become damaged and unable to function properly. As a result, toxins can build up in the body, causing a variety of symptoms. Some of these symptoms may include fatigue, bloating and swelling, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, poor appetite, changes in urination frequency or color, and anemia. Diagnosing CRF involves examining several factors like blood test results and overall medical history. Treatment for the condition typically involves managing any associated symptoms with medication or dietary changes. In some cases, dialysis may also be necessary to support patients with severe CRF. Overall, chronic renal failure is a serious but manageable condition that requires careful monitoring and management by patients and their healthcare providers.

Renal artery stenosis

Renal artery stenosis refers to a condition in which one or more of the arteries that deliver blood to the kidneys becomes narrowed or blocked. This can lead to a number of adverse health effects, including increased blood pressure, chronic kidney failure, and possibly even heart attack or stroke. While there are a number of possible causes for this condition, including genetic factors, certain lifestyle choices such as smoking can also increase the risk of developing renal artery stenosis. Fortunately, treatments are available for this condition, including medications and medical procedures like angioplasty. For those who are diagnosed with renal artery stenosis, early and effective treatment is essential for maintaining overall health and wellbeing.

Renal cancer

Renal cancer begins in the kidneys, which are a pair of bean-shaped organs that filter waste from the blood and produce urine. The most common type of renal cancer is clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for about three-quarters of all cases. RCC typically affects middle-aged adults and is more common in men than women. Other types of renal cancer include papillary renal cell carcinoma, chromophobe renal cell carcinoma, and collecting duct carcinoma. Treatment for renal cancer may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. The type of treatment will depend on the stage of the cancer and the patient's overall health. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for the best possible outcome.

Polycystic kidney disease

Polycystic kidney disease, or PKD, is a complex condition that affects the kidneys and other organs in the body. This disorder occurs when small cysts grow in the kidneys, gradually interfering with their ability to filter waste products from the blood. As these cysts start to expand, they can cause a number of severe symptoms such as high blood pressure, chronic pain, nausea and fatigue. In some cases, PKD also results in serious complications such as renal failure or a stroke. However, there are treatments available that can help people manage this disorder and slow its progression over time. By working closely with a medical team and making lifestyle changes to support kidney health, it is possible for people living with PKD to have long and healthy lives.

Urinary tract infection

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that can occur in any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. UTIs are most commonly caused by bacteria, but they can also be caused by fungi or viruses. Symptoms of a UTI may include pain or burning during urination, increased frequency or urgency of urination, cloudy or blood-tinged urine, and pelvic pain. If left untreated, a UTI can lead to serious complications, such as kidney damage or sepsis. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for preventing serious health problems. UTIs are typically diagnosed through urinalysis, which can detect the presence of bacteria or other organisms in the urine. Treatment usually involves antibiotics to kill the infection-causing bacteria. In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary to treat a severe UTI. Additionally, drinking plenty of fluids and emptying the bladder frequently can help to flush out bacteria and prevent reinfection. Wiping from front to back after using the restroom can also help to reduce the risk of UTI development. Avoiding masturbation devices would good idea if you get frequent urinary tract infections because they can introduce new bacteria into the urethra.

UTI and D-Mannose

A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is a common medical condition that can cause symptoms such as painful urination, abdominal discomfort, and sometimes even fever. While conventional treatments typically involve antibiotics, these medications often come with unwanted side effects like nausea and diarrhea. Fortunately, there is another alternative in the form of D-Mannose, a naturally-occurring sugar that has been shown to help treat UTIs by eliminating bacterial biofilms and relieving symptoms. Unlike antibiotics, which can damage gut health by killing off beneficial bacteria along with the harmful ones, D-Mannose does not disrupt this critical ecosystem. As a result, D-Mannose is becoming an increasingly popular treatment for UTIs, offering an effective and safe alternative to antibiotics.

Kidney stones

Kidney stones are one of the most painful medical conditions to experience. These small, hard deposits form when there is an imbalance in the levels of certain minerals in the body. As they grow larger, kidney stones can cause severe pain as they move through the urinary tract. Treatment typically involves drinking plenty of fluids and taking pain medication. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the kidney stone. Prevention is the best way to avoid kidney stones, and maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle is the best way to do this. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, and eating a diet high in fiber can help to prevent kidney stones from forming.

Glomerulonephritis

Glomerulonephritis is a serious kidney condition that occurs when the tiny filtration units in the kidneys, known as glomeruli, become inflamed and damaged. This can disrupt normal kidney function, causing a buildup of waste products in the bloodstream, resulting in numerous symptoms such as swelling and joint pain. While there is no cure for glomerulonephritis, treatment options can help to reduce inflammation and manage symptoms. These may include medications to control blood pressure or reduce harmful inflammatory chemicals, along with lifestyle changes to support overall kidney health. With proper medical care and close monitoring, many people with glomerulonephritis are able to live healthy lives despite this chronic condition.

Kidney disease is a serious condition that can lead to a variety of health problems. If you have kidney disease, it is important to monitor your symptoms and seek medical treatment as soon as possible. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing kidney disease, but by working with your healthcare team and following their recommendations, you can help improve your health and quality of life. Remember, knowledge is power, so be sure to educate yourself about kidney disease and its treatment options. With the right information and support, you can live a full and productive life despite this serious condition.

Subject: Study shows that vitamin D can help lower your risk of Type 2diabetes

Many people are frightened by the prospect of type 2 diabetes given all the risks that it comes with which include regular finger pricks for tests, and a host of complications for diseases like kidney and liver damage, and a higher risk of having stroke or heart disease. Preventing type 2 diabetes is then essential and recent studies have shown that vitamin D can help in that regard. The researchers already knew that vitamin D can help with insulin sensitivity and pancrease beta cells function so they wanted to find out the link between vitamin D and blood glucose levels. 680 women between the ages of 35 and 74 were experimented upon and they were given vitamin D supplementation and exposure to sunlight. They found a negative association between vitamin D and blood glucose level meaning that vitamin D, especially being exposed to sunlight, reduced the levels of glucose in the blood. They also found that vitamin D deficiency was associated with a high level of glucose in the blood. This present study was found to correlate with other studies between vitamin D presence in the body and glucose levels.

Key Takeaways:

  • Having type 2 diabetes is a frightening prospect because the condition entails a lot of complications like regular finger pricks for tests.
  • Since they already know that vitamin D can help one with insulin sensitivity and the function of pancreatic beta cells, the researchers wanted to find out the link.
  • 680 women were studied and they found that those who had high levels of vitamin D due to sunlight and supplementation had lower levels of blood glucose.

"Specifically, those who had high levels of vitamin D enjoyed a 55 percent lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes, a 51 percent lower change of metabolic syndrome, and a 33 percent lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease."

Subject: Use warm water and turmeric to cleanse your body, support digestion

It is estimated that a lot of Americans are affected by digestive problems. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) alone affects about 20 percent of Americans according to a 2010 estimate and that number should have increased by now. Pharmaceutical products being used to treat these symptoms can do more harm than good. Some of the drugs used for proton pump inhibitors of which 113 million are prescribed every year have been identified as the cause of bone fractures in older women and clostridium infections that result in diarrhea and life threatening conditions in older people. Some natural products though can do the work of cleansing your digestive system without the side effects and also help detox the body. One of them is turmeric. Just add some turmeric in warm water and one is ready to have these benefits. Warm water on its own is very important to the body but when mixed with turmeric it will help create bile that breaks down and absorbs fat in the body. Bile eliminates wastes in the body thereby detoxing your body the natural way.

Key Takeaways:

  • The purview of the NIDDK, otherwise known as the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disorders, covers a range of digestive complaints.
  • The large array of digestive specific ailments covered includes pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and much more.
  • Data suggests that proton pump inhibitors, like Nexium, can cause serious long-range side effects.

"Turmeric mixed in a warm glass of water will not only help cleanse your body, but they will also lend support to your digestive system."

Subject: Irritable bowel SYNDROME RELIEF: 6 ways glutamine can help, according to a new study

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) doesn't just cause uncomfortable digestive symptoms, but it also can result in intestinal hyper-permeability, which decreases the rate in which your body can absorb vitamins and nutrients that are required to thrive. An amino acid called glutamine can help by reducing the rate in which intestinal hyper-permeability occurs, allowing your system to absorb primary nutrients in a much more effective manner. It also showed to reduce the symptoms of IBS all-around.

Key Takeaways:

  • About 45 million Americans have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and they know this can be really upsetting because sometimes they have constipation and diarrhea with it.
  • The journal Gut contained a 2018 study that could be of help to people with IBS because it assessed the effectiveness and safety of an oral glutamine supplement.
  • Glutamine is an amino acid, among millions of amino acids produced by the body and that can also be found in food which are building blocks for protein.

"In the quest to find natural solutions for IBS or digestive upset, adding a glutamine supplement to a well-balanced diet could be the next key step."

Subject: Moms, add more leucine and omega-3s to your diet to boostantioxidant levels in your children's liver

When you have an imbalance of antioxidants within your system, this often leads to oxidative stress. An increase in oxidative stress unfortunately leads to many forms of cancer. Research has emerged that showed leucine and omega-3's have the ability to fight off this oxidative stress by increasing the amount of antioxidants that are found in the liver. Both of these can be found in the form of a nutritional supplement at most mainstream health and wellness stores.

Key Takeaways:

  • Every year more than 8 million people die of cancer, a disease that stems in part due to oxidative stress.
  • Nearly a quarter of those that succumb to cancer suffer from a wasting syndrome known as cachexia.
  • Cachexia sufferers endure draining weight loss, because the disease depletes carbohydrares, lipids and proteins in the body.

"Expectant mothers need a wide range of nutrients for them and their child to stay healthy."

Subject: How does poor gut health affect vitamin C and E in metabolicSYNDROME? - Medical News Bulletin

Metabolic syndrome involves a combination of at least three out of five conditions — hypertension, abdominal obesity, low “good cholesterol,” and excessively high fasting blood glucose and serum triglyceride scores. Metabolic syndrome is a major public health concern, given that more than a third of American adults have it. Recent studies suggest that eating too much saturated fat can imbalance the bacteria in the gut. This results over time in oxidative stress and inflammation that can deplete the body’s stockpiles of vitamins C and E, and also make it harder to absorb more vitamin C from food to replace what has been used up. Vitamins C and E play an important role in protecting against oxidative stress.

Key Takeaways:

  • Metabolic syndrome can lead to heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other serious conditions.
  • The American Heart association defines metabolic syndrome as abdominal obesity, raised serum triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure or raised fasting blood glucose.
  • Vitamin C and E are vital to the body's immune system and work to prevent metabolic syndrome through regular consumption of fruits and vegetables.

"Around 35% of the American adult population has metabolic syndrome, with a higher prevalence in older age groups."

Subject: Study shows lutein can boost heart health

Many people consume lutein, either as a supplement in in vegetables containing lutein, because it can provide protection from diseases of the eye. A recent study has shown that lutein can protect the heart as well. Researchers found some correlation between higher levels of lutein in the bloodstream and a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a medical term for a group of conditions including abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, and high triglycerides. Lutein, a carotenoid, is found in dark, leafy green vegetables.

Key Takeaways:

  • Carrot and kale contain the carotenoid lutein that is useful for good eye health. But it has been shown that this compound is also good for the heart.
  • Lutein, a carotenoid, can both help protect the eyes and improve eye health, while reducing the risk of developing both cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
  • To carry out their study, the scientists first concentrated on current research on lutein. They gathered 4,377 studies that were narrowed down to 71 most relevant studies.

"Dr. Elizabeth Leermakers decided to look into “lutein’s positive effects against inflammation and oxidative stresses in the eyes,” and together with a team of researchers, she searched for links between the presence of lutein (or a lack of the carotenoid) and diseases caused by stressors like heart attack, metabolic syndrome, and stroke."

Subject: Ribose Energy-Boosting Heart Supporter or Sugar Trap?

Ribose is a natural energy-boosting chemical that our bodies produce in order to provide our cells with the appropriate energy levels. It has been shown to support heart health by regenerating the necessary energy levels that can be depleted by cardiovascular disease. Ribose has also shown to help patients who are suffering from left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. Other advantages of ribose include: improved skin health, better workouts due to the energy increase, and aiding in the treatment of fibromyalgia.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ribose is also known as D-ribose. It is naturally created by our bodies and provides sufficient energy to the body cells.
  • The sources for D-ribose include plant and animal sources. Sometimes, it can also be obtained as a supplement.
  • D-ribose is unlike every other sugar which can increase blood sugar. People are warned that D-ribose can even lower blood sugar.

"In fact, scientific studies show that D-ribose may help a number of serious health concerns, including heart diseases, fibromyalgia symptoms and chronic fatigue syndrome."

Subject: 7 benefits of glutamine

Glutamine is just one of several free amino acids that are naturally present within the human body, but glutamine just happens to serve a plethora of benefits that most of us aren't even aware of. Glutamine has the ability to improve cognitive function through helping the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid within the brain. It can also boost our immune systems by building the gastrointestinal wall, which could be due to 70% of glutamine being found in the gut.

Key Takeaways:

  • Although all amino acids are important in the body, but the most important is glutamine because it is the most involved in different bodily functions.
  • Some of the health benefits of having sufficient glutamine in the body involves the promotion of weight loss, maintenance of gut wall integrity, and improving the skin.
  • Glutamine prevents a person from having a leaky gut syndrome because it maintains the integrity of the walls of the digestive tract.

"Cancer treatments like radiation and chemotherapy are very intense processes that have repercussions on a person’s health. Studies have shown that taking glutamine effectively reduces the complications that therapy has on metabolism while still preventing tumor growth."

Subject: A form of vitamin E derived from annato can lessen your risk ofbone loss due to diabetes

Tocotrienols, a chemical grouping that belongs to the vitamin E family, has been shown by research to have efficacy in reducing blood sugar levels and inhibiting bone loss. The most recent research came in the form of two studies, both of which made use of a tropical fruit, known as the annato. A pre-diabetic state and osteoporosis was induced in rodent subjects for both of the studies. One of the studies, conducted in Malaysia, showed that the rodent subjects had better parameters for a number of metabolic syndrome indicators, such as fasting blood glucose and triglycerides. In the case of the Malaysian study, the rodents either received a dose of tocotrienols commensurate with normal human supplementation or a diet stripped of tocotrienols. A Texas-based research study compared the tocotrienols with Metformin, a commonly prescribed diabetic medicine. Results showed that the tocotrienols in higher doses was better than the medicine in instituting bone growth. A third study, also in Malaysia, used human subjects with type 2 diabetes. Markers for the human subjects were also improved for the subjects that consumed tocotrienols.

Key Takeaways:

  • There are so many people in the world today that are suffering from diabetic disorders.
  • Understanding how to use vitamins to combat your disease is a great method to use.
  • You should do everything in your power to reduce the risk of losing density in your bones as you get older.

"Studies have shown that tocotrienols may help inhibit bone loss and regulate blood sugar levels. The tocotrienols used in the studies were derived from the red-orange tropical fruit known as annatto."

Subject: Pumpkin Seeds: The Antioxidant Seeds that Combat Diabetes, HeartDisease & Cancer Cells

Pumpkins don't get the attention of other vegetables. Even during their season, it's the pies made from the meat of the pumpkin that get most of the table time. However, pumpkin seeds should not be relegated to the trash. Like sunflower, and other seeds, they make good snacking. And they have a lot of health benefits for users. For example, they're full of antioxidants, like many veggies, which makes them useful for warding off many unwanted conditions. They're good for hearts and for leveling blood sugar. Study has shown that the seeds benefit the heart in an array of ways. Nitric oxide is enhanced, while blood pressure and cholesterol are lowered. The seeds are protein-packed and fiber-rich, which means that sugar is absorbed more slowly. The seeds are also rich in tryptophan and magnesium, known to promote optimal sleep. Study has also shown that sperm count was enhanced and abnormalities were improved when rodent subjects were given pumpkin seeds. Certain seed properties may have anti-cancer effects as well, even the ability to help with overactive bladder syndrome.

Key Takeaways:

  • Pumpkin seeds are known to improve sleep quality and stabilize blood sugar levels.
  • Pumpkin seeds fight coronary heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
  • Pumpkin seeds can also improve male fertility and improve prostate health.

"However, there are many benefits of pumpkin seeds that make them a worthy addition to your diet, both during the holidays and all year round."

Subject: Another study finds turmeric and curcumin to be a safe, effectivetreatment for lowering cholesterol and protecting the heart

Turmeric and its much-lauded, health-giving component, curcumin, have had a health buzz about them for a long time. The health benefits to those that use turmeric and consequently curcumin, have long been noted. But, though its benefits for a wide array of bodily systems, including the cardiovascular, are not disputed, it has heretofore not been understood if turmeric, or more specifically curcumin, does some of its wonders by lowering lipid levels. The Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University has now performed a meta-analysis of available data, surrounding turmeric and curcumin, as a means of filling the knowledge gap. The researchers began by filtering the data, searching for studies revolving around turmeric, cholesterol and triglycerides. To ensure the data was all the more compelling and germane, the researchers trimmed down the parameters even more, allowing for only those tests that involved subjects laboring under the effects of metabolic SYNDROME or type 2 diabetes. In these cases possible negative effects to the heart would prove particularly relevant. The meta-analysis revealed that turmeric and curcumin had positive effects to impart on the levels of serum triglycerides apparent in its user-subjects. The two components also positively impacted the low-density lipo-protein cholesterol levels of the user-subjects. The researchers theorized that positive chemical activity was initiated by the components, thereby causing the beneficial aspects. Other cholesterol and lipid markers were not affected. In general, turmeric and curcumin have been shown to limit oxidative stress and inflammation as well as benefit the blood vessel lining, all of which can prevent a serious cardiac event.

Key Takeaways:

  • There are a lot of effective ways in which you can help lower your high cholesterol.
  • There are plenty of natural remedies out there that allow you to control your health.
  • These new substances are natural and have been proven to work on numerous different occasions.

"Turmeric and curcumin are two substances most known for their wide array of health benefits."

Bifidobacterium Lactis: The Bacterium That Could Help You Lose Weight & Fight Inflammation

The probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis, or B. lactis, is a powerhouse for gut health. Why is this strain of bacteria so important? One study published in 2015 showed that B. lactis could improve unpleasant and painful symptoms associated with poor gut motility, dysbiosis, and GI hypersensitivity. B. lactis is definitely one of the “good guys” of the gut bacteria world because it contributes to a healthy and balanced microbiome, which positively affects balanced blood sugar and optimal weight maintenance.

Key Takeaways:

  • While probiotics are ingested live organisms that are good for gut health, a prebiotic is food that helps these organisms thrive.
  • Bifidobacterium lactis in fermented milk is good for gut health because it improves gastrointestinal symptoms and well-being.
  • Oral health is tied to gut health in intricate ways. Studies with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has shown this truth.

"A particular strain of B. lactis, known as HN019, has been shown to have a significant impact on those with metabolic syndrome. This probiotic had beneficial effects on inflammation, nitric oxide metabolites, and antioxidant measurements, and the authors of the study stated that if their results are confirmed, supplementation with this probiotic should be considered further."

Microbiome, Herbal Medicine, and Probiotics Combine to Extend Lifespan

Scientists at McGill University were able to significantly increase the life expectancy of Drosophila fruit flies by using probiotics and the prebiotic Triphala mixture, an element of traditional Indian medicine. The experiment was based on the theory of the gut-brain axis, a two way superhighway of communication between the neurons and the digestive tract that helps the body respond to its environment and handle stress. Changes associated with the aging process, such as depletion of beneficial gut flora in the gastric microbiome, can interfere with the body’s ability to handle stress, inflammation and damage effectively. It is thought that the pro- and pre- biotics mixture helped mitigate these changes to the gastric microbiome.

Key Takeaways:

  • The theory of the Gut-Brain Axis (GBA) posits that the digestive tract and nervous system engage in constant and extensive communication.
  • The aging process tends to alter the gastric microbiome in harmful ways as populations of beneficial gut bacteria die off, potentially impacting all parts of the GBA.
  • As the body ages, it becomes more vulnerable to inflammation, oxidative stress and other forms of damage, many of which can be aggravated by the loss of gut bacteria and other changes in the GBA.

"The researchers, headed by Satya Prakash, Ph.D., a professor of biomedical engineering in McGill’s Faculty of Medicine, hope that the combination of probiotics and the prebiotic Triphala formulation could help to prevent or treat human disorders ranging from diabetes and obesity, to neurodegeneration, chronic inflammation, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, and perhaps even cancer."

Probiotics are the guts' best friends

Probiotics are important not only for digestive health, but also a person's overall health as well. Benefits of probiotics include relief from symptoms of gastrointestinal problems, but can also extend to other parts of the body, such as helping the body better ingest vitamins and minerals. Maintaining a healthy diet can help make sure the body maintains the necessary probiotics; however, some foods are better for consuming probiotics than others. Foods such as yogurt and miso are some of the best sources of probiotics. As part of a healthy lifestyle, reduce stress, eat healthy, and use antibiotics only when necessary to keep the gut a healthy home for probiotics.

Key Takeaways:

  • Probiotics assist the human gut by creating an acid environment, suitable for the absorption of minerals.
  • They can slow down chronic hypersensitivity to various ingestible items, thereby assisting with autoimmune conditions and regulating inflammation.
  • These helpful strains of bacteria also secrete substances that aid in inhibiting the growth of pathogenic substances in the gut.

"Research has shown that either single-strain or multi-strain probiotic or prebiotic supplements can reduce palpitations, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance and discomfort."

  • Can vitamins help prevent or treat dry eyes? We find out. If an individual has a healthy balanced diet, they should be able to get all the vitamins and minerals they need from their diet. However, some people may need to take a supplement if advised by their doctor.
  • Eye health and vitamins: Links between vitamins and minerals and eye health are emerging, but there are currently no clear answers, and more research is needed.

"People should be skeptical about any vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements that claim to treat dry eye SYNDROME."

Subject: This Man Used Hemp Oil On Live TV To Draw Attention To His Granddaughter's Health

The United States is not the only place where marijuana plant products are under fire. Even in Australia, it is nearly impossible to get CBD oil for treatment of medical conditions such as epilepsy. One particular case in Australia is gaining media attention. It is the case of 5-year-old Katelyn whose grandfather has been giving her CBD oil to help with her Dravet SYNDROME seizures. Her grandfather is under threat of being arrested, but he says it is worth it if he gets his family better access to a drug that will greatly help with her condition.

Key Takeaways:

  • A millionaire philanthropist has taken hemp oil on national television to highlight his granddaughter's struggle to get treatment for her epilepsy, as the five-year-old-girl begs prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and state premiers to make medicinal cannabis more accessible.
  • The letter, published on the Greenlight foundation website, pleads with Turnbull and state premiers to speed up the process to make medical cannabis more widely available.
  • Australia is progressing towards conventional medical cannabis treatments, but each state has different laws governing use of the medicine, while other states are in various stages if medical trials.

Subject: Which Vitamins are Good for Dry Eyes?

If you suffer from dry eyes, you know how annoying and painful it can be. There are many medications out there that cater to this all too common condition, but what if your diet can help with the problem? While vitamins A, C, E, and zinc are all good for eye health, there is currently debate on whether or not vitamins can help with dry eyes. Vitamin A, vitamin D, and omega-3 have been linked with dry eyes in patients, but more research needs to be done to see if increasing doses will help with symptoms.

Key Takeaways:

  • Dry eye SYNDROME is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not make enough tears, or if the tears vanish too quickly.
  • If an individual has a healthy balanced diet, they should be able to get all the vitamins and minerals they need from their diet. However, some people may need to take a supplement if advised by their doctor.
  • In these cases, dietary antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E, and the mineral zinc may help prevent conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) from developing. AMD is a condition where vision is lost in the macular, which is the part of the eye that controls central vision.

Subject: Gut bacteria may hold key to treating autoimmune disease

Inflammation and autoimmunity are caused by inappropriate activity of the body's own regulatory T immune cells. A mutation in a gene called Foxp3 causes a fatal disease, IPEX SYNDROME, where these cells run amok. But new research shows an unexpected link to the gut: Foxp3 mutant mice end up missing a particular type of bacteria from their intestines. By replacing the missing bacterial species in the gut microbiome, many of the T cell-mediated inflammatory symptoms could be improved.

Key Takeaways:

  • T reg cells suppress the immune system and prevent it from attacking the body's own tissues by mistake.Defects in T reg cells therefore lead to various types of autoimmune disease.
  • This inherited autoimmune disorder is characterized by a variety of inflammatory conditions including eczema, type I diabetes, and severe enteropathy.
  • Autoimmune diseases can also be caused by changes in the gut microbiome, the population of bacteria that reside within the gastrointestinal tract.

"The study, published online in The Journal of Experimental Medicine, suggests that replacing the missing gut bacteria."

Subject: Omega-3 intake may aid in recovery of concussions and brain injury

Treating brain injuries and concussions is difficult. However, in clinical experience, aggressively ingesting omega-3 can help a person suffering from these maladies on the road to recovery. It is also used to help with brain surgery recovery. Without the proper amount of omegas, recovery from a traumatic brain injury might not happen.

Key Takeaways:

  • The treatment of concussions and traumatic brain injury is a clinical challenge. Clinical studies thus far have failed to identify an effective treatment strategy.
  • The article reviews preclinical research and cites three brain injury case studies that resulted from a mining accident, a motor vehicle accident, and a drowning accident
  • It is well recognized that n-3FAs are not a drug and not a cure and every situation is different.

"According to emerging science and clinical experience, aggressive intake of omega-3 fatty acids (n-3FA) seems to be beneficial to TBI, concussion, and post-concussion SYNDROME patients. This research is presented in Concussions, Traumatic Brain Injury, and the Innovative Use of Omega-3s, a review article from the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, official publication of the American College of Nutrition."

Subject: 8 Signs That You Have A Leaky Gut And How To Fix It

Do you have a leaky gut? It is a potentially dangerous condition that could cause a whole host of problems that you'd never guess had anything to do with intestinal health, from chronic fatigue and headaches to skin problems and joint pain. A healthy, happy gut is a key part of your overall health, and you can take some simple steps to ensure it stays in top shape.

Key Takeaways:

  • This is alarming, given that intestinal permeability has been mentioned in medical literature for the past century.
  • Meaning, if you suffer from increased inflammation due to leaky gut SYNDROME and have a predisposition within your joints, higher levels of inflammation will likely result in pain.
  • As fewer antimicrobial peptides are produced in the skin, the severity of inflammation and the possibility of infection increases.

"Leaky gut SYNDROME is just as it sounds. It’s an abnormal increase in the permeability of your small intestine."

Benefits of stress management

Subject: Benefits of stress management

Mental Health can be overlooked in our everyday lives but it plays a huge role in our health. Our mental state can affect us in many ways both positively and negatively. This article will be discuss the importance of Mental Health with a concentration on stress management. Stress is a significant cause of mental illness today and although we can't eradicate it, we can manage it It is important to understand that not all stress is negative. Stress may occur prior to weddings, graduations, or even social gatherings, but no matter the source of stress, your bodies respond the same. Also, some stress is good for you in order to manage skills needed for survival such as fight or flight.

Experts suggest a combination of physical, social, environmental, and psychological approaches to managing stress. When we are stressed, we encounter General Adaptation SYNDROME (GAS). GAS is your complex physiological responses that happen as a result of the stress and has three phases. The first phase of GAS is the alarm phase. The alarm phase occurs when we sense there is a stressor present (Body doesn't sense whether it is a good or bad stressor), everything becomes heightened and hormones respond. The seconds phase of GAS is called the resistance phase. During the resistance phase your body resists stress to get your it back to homeostasis. If you can't rid the stress you move into exhaustion The last phase, exhaustion, occurs when your body is tired and can't fight anymore to get it back to homeostasis. Physical or emotional tension is often a good indicator of stress.

Below is a short list of symptoms from stress.

  • Tension and irritability
  • Fear and anxiety about the future
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Being numb to one's feelings
  • Loss of interest in normal activities
  • Loss of appetite

We all experience some level of stress on a regular basis but as I mentioned before, too much can be harmful to your body. Below I have listed ways in which you can deal with and reduce stress levels.

Take Care of Yourself

Taking care of yourself seems self-explanatory for many but as we enter the exhaustion phase our attention to self-care begins to decline. Eat a healthy diet, get plenty of sleep, treat yourself, and maintain your normal routine.

Stay Active

It is often said that exercise is the most underused stress reliever and this is 100% true. Working out forces you to take your mind off of the stressors and focus on what you are doing and nothing else. Get in a gym or go for a run to lower your stress levels.

Social Support

Being able to talk to someone during stressful times is very important. Connect with a friend or family member that you will listen to what you want to get off your mind. This can be very helpful for stress reduction.

Avoid Alcohol or Drugs

People often turn to drugs and alcohol in times of stress but fail to realize they only provide temporary relief. Once your "high" or "buzz" wears off, you will more than likely feel worse than before. Alcohol and drugs add to stress and do not help to reduce its impact. I hope this information helps you to recognize when you are stressed and how to handle it Stress is a serious issue that we tend to overlook. Stress is usually a catalyst for other illnesses such as anxiety to occur.

In conclusion chamomile will help you zap stress and unwind and have healthy life.

The Dangers Of Over The Counter Pain Meds

Subject: The Dangers Of Over The Counter Pain Meds

In many ways, pain meds such as Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen have provided countless patients with an inexpensive treatment for regular aches and pains, headaches and migraines, and to help deal with fevers. There's no doubt that these painkillers work, but there are doubts whether their positive side effects outweigh the negative.

Dangers associated with Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen

Liver damage

Liver damage is a common problem, damage that can't be repaired or reversed. One of the main side effects that manifests within children taking either Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen is known as Reye SYNDROME, a condition that produces excessive fat deposits around the child's organs (especially their liver). This condition can result in death as pressure can build up to fatal levels around the child's brain.

Kidney damage

Other organ damage related to Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen usage includes inflammation within the kidneys (leading eventually to their complete deterioration) and hyperthyroidism.

Internal bleeding

Higher doses of pain meds can increase the danger of bleeding or torn stomach lining by several times. Stomach problems are also often noted within regular users of these over the counter pain meds. While bleeding ulcers tend to be the most commonly discussed issue within the media, other problems include heartburn, indigestion, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, frequent and unavoidable burping and vomiting. Indeed, severe reactions to these painkillers can even cause a cerebral edema, a condition where excess water floods around the brain, causing anything from migraines to death.

These are some the many side effects and negative conditions associated with significant usage of over the counter painkillers. While it's clear that many people use Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen for extended periods of time without developing serious side effects, it's also clear that the potential dangers of regular and prolonged use need to be taken into consideration. If you are already at risk for any of the above problems, and if you are currently on any Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen medications, you should consult your doctor.

Eye Inflammation and one Herb To Prevent It!
TopPreviousNext

Date: September 20, 2016 11:34 AM
Author: Darrell Miller
Subject: Eye Inflammation and one Herb To Prevent It!

What is eye inflammation?

Inflammation is a process by which bodies react against infection, injury or irritation. Inflammation may occur due to quite harmless substances such as dust or even pollen grains. Body's immune system can also react against its own tissues to cause an autoimmune reaction. Inflammation of the eye occurs in response to irritation, injury, autoimmune disorders, or allergies. An inflamed eye often appears red, watery and in most cases, painful. Such eye inflammation affects all ages and lasts from a few minutes to months and years depending on the causative agent or other underlying disease conditions. It can affect one eye or both the eyes.

What are the signs and symptoms of an inflamed eye?

Inflammation of eyes can affect the surrounding soft tissues such as eyelids. The primary signs of inflammation include redness of the eye, swelling, increased warmth in the affected eye and excessive tearing. Other symptoms are causal in nature. These include-

Bruising: It is mainly observed on the eyelids. Bruising usually stems from an eye trauma/injury.

Increased Sensitivity: The affected eye has an increased sensitivity to bright light (photophobic). Other visual changes that may be noticed are blurred vision or loss of vision.

Pus Discharge: There is increased pus discharge in the affected eye. It is noticeable in the morning with the stickiness of the eyelids.

Bulging of Eyes: Bulging or protruding of the eye signifies swelling of the eyes.

Watery Eyes: Affected areas secrete excessive tears due to irritation.

Dryness: Depending on the underlying diseases such as Sjogren's SYNDROME, dryness of mucous membrane occurs. Dry eyes tend to become itchy and gritty.

Other prominent symptoms include general body swelling (edema), respiratory problems or change in level of consciousness, which indicate a serious problem and it is advisable to visit a physician.

What are the causes of eye inflammation?

Eye inflammation is a response to infections, allergies, injury to the eye, or autoimmune diseases. Some of the common causes of eye inflammation include:

Allergic reaction: Many individuals develop allergic reactions to substances which are not compatible with their body. Reaction to environmental allergens such as dust and pollen grains is the most common cause of irritation of the eye which leads to inflammation. Other common allergic substances include drugs, some foods, and insect bites such as bee sting.

Infections: Eye inflammation due to infections is common in people with low hygiene standards. Cleaning eyes twice a day, in the morning and before sleep at night, is advised to prevent infections. Women who use mascara are advised to wash their make-up before sleeping to prevent its adverse reaction with eyes.

Traumatic Injury: The eye is prone to injuries due to its exposure to the environment. Common injuries that cause eye inflammation include blunt trauma, corneal abrasion, irritants such as chemicals, orbital fractures or insect bites.

Autoimmune diseases: Inflammation of the eye could be a manifestation of an underlying autoimmune disease. In such a case, the body might develop inflammatory response towards tissues of the eyes. Some of the common diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, Behcet's SYNDROME (cause ulcers and abrasions), and Sjogren's SYNDROME (cause dryness of mucous membranes causing itchiness).

Contact lenses: People who use contact lenses are at a higher risk of getting an inflamed eye. Contact lenses should be kept clean to avoid importation of irritant substances and infections into the eye.

How is an inflamed eye treated?

In many cases inflammation of the eye does not need treatment as it lasts for a few minutes. In case the inflammation exceeds four days, there is a need to see the doctor to determine any underlying causes.

Inflammation of the eyes can be relieved in the following ways:

  1. Clean the eyelids in the morning and evening.
  2. Rub gently from outside to inside with a wet cotton swab.
  3. Lay a warm wet cloth on the eyes. This relieves the symptoms of the inflamed eye.
  4. Avoid wearing contact lenses as they can worsen the symptoms of eye inflammation.
  5. Visit the doctor for comprehensive treatment. The doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation while evaluating any underlying diseases.

The one single most important herb anybody can take to reduce inflammation, in the eye as well as systemic inflammation is "curcumin."  Curcumin is the most powerful substance discovered so far in nature which naturally lowers inflammation with zero side effects.  If you have followed the above list of ways to help reduce inflammation and you still struggle with eye inflammation,  consider taking curcumin daily to eliminate inflammation throughout the body!
