How Niacin Helps the Body
Niacin, also known as Vitamin B-3, is an essential B-complex vitamin. It is found in many foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and nuts. The body needs niacin to break down fats and sugars in food to produce energy. Niacin also helps keep the skin, nervous system, and digestive system healthy. Flush-free niacin contains inositol hexanicotinate, a form of niacin that consists of six molecules of niacin linked to a single inositol molecule. It is slowly broken down in the body to yield free niacin and inositol. This gradual release of niacin allows for true niacin activity without the characteristic niacin flush that many people cannot tolerate.
Niacin Deficiency
A lack of niacin can cause pellagra, a condition marked by diarrhea, dermatitis (skin inflammation), and dementia (mental deterioration). Pellagra was once common in areas where the diet consisted largely of corn but is now rare because processed corn is fortified with niacin. A deficiency of tryptophan, an amino acid needed to make niacin, can also cause pellagra. A diet lacking protein can lead to a tryptophan deficiency because tryptophan is found only in foods that contain protein. Alcoholism, some cancers, and certain drugs can also cause pellagra by interfering with the body's ability to absorb or use tryptophan or niacin.
Niacin Uses
Flush-free niacin is used as a dietary supplement and as a treatment for niacin deficiency (pellagra). It is also used for preventing heart disease; treating high cholesterol; high blood pressure; migraines; cluster headaches; dizziness; lightheadedness; blurred vision; weakness; vertigo (abnormal sensation of movement); joint pain; mouth sores; skin infections; production of sex hormones and other hormones in the body; diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage caused by diabetes); Alzheimer's disease; cataracts; glaucoma (increased pressure within the eye that may damage nerves); scarlet fever; and HIV/AIDS. Some people apply flush-free niacin directly to the skin for preventing sunburns and treating large pores on the face ("open comedones"), acne vulgaris (common acne), red blotchy skin due to expanded blood vessels ("couperose"), and decreasing muscle soreness after exercise ("delayed onset muscle soreness" or DOMS). In addition, flush-free niacin is sometimes included in topical preparations containing other ingredients such as aloe vera gel, Manuka honey, tea tree oil, and elderberry extract for treating acne vulgaris or solar keratoses (clusters of rough-textured scaly spots on sun-exposed areas of the skin).
Niacin is an essential B-vitamin that has many benefits for maintaining a healthy body. Foods rich in protein are the best sources of niacin. Niacin deficiencies can lead to pellagra which causes dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia. Flush-free niacin provides true niacin activity without causing the characteristic flush that many people cannot tolerate. Niacin can be used as a dietary supplement or treatment for deficiency but also has uses for prevent heart disease, migraines, cluster headaches, among other things when applied directly to the skin or ingested.*
