What is Psyllium Husk?
Psyllium husk, or more correctly psyllium seed husk, is the husk of the seeds of a member of the Plantago family of plants. Plantago is grown throughout Europe and parts of India, and is commonly used as a component in high-fiber breakfast cereals where it is claimed to help reduce cholesterol levels. This property was recognized by the FDA in 1998 when that body permitted its use in labeling to that effect when used in combination with a low cholesterol and low saturated fat diet.
The seed husk is used commercially as a thickener, forming a mucilage when mixed with water and used to thicken frozen desserts such as ice cream. However, this thickening effect can also be put to good effect in dealing with intestinal problems such as constipation and diarrhea - yes, both!
The ground husk absorbs water forming a thick mucilage that softens hardened stool in the gut and enables it pass through the intestine and colon. It also absorbs the excess water in diarrhea converting it into semi-solid that your natural intestinal action can pass through your system normally. Psyllium husk is the laxative of choice for many people because it does not train your intestinal system to operate only with it as many other laxatives tend to do.
