Source Naturals Melatonin 1 mg – Sublingual Orange Lozenges (Item SN0706)

A gentle, fast-dissolving sleep lozenge formulated to work with your body's natural circadian rhythm — not overpower it.

If you struggle to switch your mind off at night, or if standard sleep supplements leave you in a morning brain fog, Source Naturals Sleep Science® Melatonin 1 mg Sublingual Orange offers a smarter, scientifically balanced approach. Instead of swallowing a massive pill that gets broken down in your stomach, this pleasant citrus lozenge melts directly under your tongue. It delivers a bioavailable, physiological micro-dose that signals your internal biological clock that it is time for restful, uninterrupted sleep.

✓ Rapid Sublingual Delivery: Dissolves under the tongue to bypass digestive degradation.
✓ Smart 1 mg Dose: Matches natural nighttime hormone surges without the dreaded morning grogginess.
✓ Sugar-Free Natural Orange: Sweetened with tooth-friendly sorbitol and mannitol.
✓ Clean & Non-GMO Validated: Free of gluten, dairy, yeast, artificial colors, and harsh synthetics.

The Sublingual Advantage: Why Dissolving Under Your Tongue Beats Swallowing Pills

Most standard sleep aids come in swallowed tablets or capsules. The problem with swallowing melatonin is a biological process called hepatic first-pass metabolism. In simple terms: when you swallow a pill, it travels through your stomach and straight into your liver, where specialized enzymes (specifically CYP1A2) break down and destroy up to 85% of the active ingredient before it ever enters your general circulation.

Because swallowed absorption is so inconsistent—ranging from 1% to 37% bioavailability depending on what you ate and your metabolic rate—many supplement companies compensate by packing 5 mg, 10 mg, or even 12 mg into a single pill. That creates a feast-or-famine roller coaster for your bloodstream.

How Sublingual Delivery Works

The tissue beneath your tongue (the sublingual mucosa) is paper-thin and rich in microscopic blood vessels (capillaries). When you let Source Naturals 1 mg lozenge dissolve under your tongue, melatonin diffuses directly across this mucous membrane into the sublingual veins. It flows directly into your bloodstream, entirely skipping the liver's breakdown barrier. This delivers faster, more reliable sleep onset support with a fraction of the dosage.

The 1 mg “Physiological” Sweet Spot: Why Less Melatonin Is Actually More

In the world of sleep supplements, there is a common myth that bigger numbers mean better sleep. In reality, your brain produces only tiny fractions of a milligram of melatonin naturally each night—typically around 10 to 80 picograms per milliliter in blood serum.

When you take a 5 mg or 10 mg supplement, you are flooding your brain with up to 50 times the physiological level your body is designed to handle. This massive surge can overwhelm and desensitize your brain's MT1 and MT2 sleep receptors. The common results? Restless tossing, overly intense nightmares, and a heavy, groggy “sleep hangover” that lingers halfway through the next morning.

Groundbreaking sleep research pioneered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) demonstrated that low, physiological doses ranging between 0.3 mg and 1.0 mg are the most effective for restoring natural sleep patterns without side effects. A 1 mg sublingual lozenge gives your brain the gentle bedtime cue it recognizes, encouraging sleepiness while allowing your levels to return to baseline by dawn so you awaken clear-headed.

Evidence from Comprehensive Clinical Meta-Analysis

In a landmark meta-analysis published in PLOS ONE analyzing 19 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials across 1,683 participants, researchers confirmed that exogenous melatonin significantly reduces sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), boosts overall sleep duration, and improves perceived sleep quality without building tolerance over time.

Who Benefits Most From Source Naturals 1 mg Sublingual Melatonin?

Frequent Travelers & Jet Lag Recovery

Flying across two or more time zones disrupts your internal clock (circadian rhythm). Dissolving one lozenge close to target bedtime in your new destination speeds up circadian adaptation and prevents 3:00 AM wakefulness.

Shift Workers & Rotating Schedules

Healthcare workers, first responders, and overnight employees must sleep when daylight is bright. A 1 mg sublingual lozenge provides the biological “darkness signal” your brain needs to fall asleep during daytime hours.

Adults Experiencing Age-Related Decline

Natural pineal gland melatonin production drops steadily as we age, contributing to fragmented night sleep and early awakenings. Micro-dosing 1 mg gently replenishes youthful nocturnal levels without dependency.

Pill-Averse & Sensitive Sleepers

If you hate swallowing hard pills right before lying down in bed, these smooth, natural orange lozenges eliminate nighttime choking hazards while delivering fast comfort.

How to Take for Maximum Nighttime Absorption

To experience the quickest onset and deepest benefits from your sublingual lozenge, proper administration makes all the difference:

1 Timing is Key: Take 1 lozenge roughly 20 to 30 minutes before you plan to turn out your bedroom lights. 2 Dissolve, Don't Chew: Place the lozenge directly under your tongue or between your cheek and gum. Allow it to dissolve completely without biting or chewing. 3 Hold Saliva Briefly: Let the liquid absorb through your oral tissue for 60–90 seconds before swallowing so the sublingual capillaries absorb the active molecules. 4 Pair with Sleep Hygiene: Dim ambient overhead lighting and power off smartphones or tablets. Blue light suppresses your brain's natural melatonin synthesis, counteracting your supplement.

Safety Guidelines, Contraindications & Drug Interactions

Because dietary supplements have active biological effects, transparency and safety come first. Melatonin is non-addictive and does not cause physical dependence, but responsible use is essential.

Precautions & Medical Conditions

Use only at bedtime. For adult use only. Not intended for children, teenagers, or women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. If you are under medical supervision or have an autoimmune condition (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis), diabetes, clinical depression, a thyroid disorder, epilepsy, leukemia, or a lymphoproliferative disorder, consult your physician before using melatonin.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why choose a 1 mg sublingual lozenge instead of 5 mg or 10 mg gummies?

Clinical research demonstrates that 0.3 mg to 1 mg is the optimal physiological dose that restores nocturnal melatonin levels to a natural, healthy baseline. High-dose 5 mg or 10 mg gummies overload your receptors and can cause vivid nightmares, nighttime agitation, and morning grogginess. Furthermore, sublingual delivery avoids digestive destruction, meaning 1 mg absorbed through oral tissues provides clean, predictable effectiveness without excess hormone load.

How long does it take for Source Naturals Sublingual Melatonin to work?

Because the lozenge dissolves directly into the vascular network beneath your tongue, initial absorption begins within minutes. Most individuals notice natural sleepiness developing within 20 to 30 minutes after dissolution.

Will taking this supplement stop my body from producing its own melatonin?

No. Unlike synthetic pharmaceutical sleep medications or testosterone supplements, physiological doses of exogenous melatonin (such as 1 mg) have been shown in clinical trials not to suppress endogenous pineal melatonin synthesis once supplementation ceases. It acts as a circadian chronobiotic (time cue), not a hormonal shutoff switch.

Does this product contain sugar or cause cavities?

No. Source Naturals Sleep Science® Melatonin 1 mg Sublingual Orange contains zero table sugar, sucrose, or corn syrup. It is lightly sweetened with sorbitol and mannitol, naturally occurring non-cariogenic sugar alcohols that do not promote tooth decay.

How should I store this product to keep it fresh?

Store your bottle tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, excess heat, and bathroom moisture. Do not use if the tamper-evident safety seal is broken or missing upon delivery.

Rating: 5/5

There are simply no words to explain how awesome this product is. The Melatonin 1mg Sublingual Orange has worked wonders for my skin. I have tried many other skin products before but nothing has worked quite as well as the "Melatonin 1 mg Sublingual Orange." At first I was skeptical after using so many skin products before and being completely and utterly disappointed by the results, or should I say, lack of results. However, to my shocking surprise, I was amazed at the results that came in just a short matter of time. All in all, this product works wonderfully.
