Curcumin is the major component of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and extensive scientific research on Curcumin has demonstrated its potent antioxidant properties. Through its antioxidant mechanisms, Curcumin supports colon health, exerts neuroprotective activity and helps maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.*
|Turmeric Research |
Turmeric is a spice that is obtained by boiling the rhizomes of the Curcuma longa plant for long periods, drying them and then powdering them. It has well known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and has been used as an antibacterial antiseptic in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for many hundreds of years. However, its full potential has likely not yet been realized, and the spice and its components are currently under investigation for a number of potential health benefits.
The Number One research carried out on any antioxidant natural remedy these days is its effects on cancer: both its treatment and prevention, and it comes as no surprise to find that a great deal of research is currently being carried out on turmeric in this respect. Laboratory studies have indicated that curcumin, the main active component of turmeric, does have an effect on cancer.
It appears to kill some cancer cells and stop more from developing. The cancers that curcumin has shown potential with are bowel, stomach, breast and skin cancer cells. Success has been achieved by both American and British researchers, and while some cancers are retarded, others are preventing from spreading to other parts of the body.
However, scientists are cautious, and while turmeric is very safe in cooking, the safety of the quantities needed for success in treating cancer is as yet unknown. It is important that you do not self-treat using turmeric and refer to your doctor, but there is little harm in using it extensively in cooking or as a supplement according to the instructed dosage, and who knows how much you will be protecting yourself by doing so.
