Other Benefits of Saw Palmetto
Most men are aware that saw palmetto can be used to ease a condition known technically as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and more commonly as an enlarged prostate. This condition affects only men, because only men have a prostate, being a component of their reproductive system. However, taking saw palmetto can also help with a few other conditions although not all claims have been supported by controlled tests on human subjects.
Some claim that saw palmetto can help in the treatment of acne in adults (not children), although there appears to be little medical evidence for this. Nevertheless, it is a claim based upon results of using it, although you would likely get better results by taking an Omega-3 fish oil supplement. Hair loss is another condition for which saw palmetto is sometimes suggested. This is because swelling of the prostate is sometimes caused by the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Not only does an excess of DHT lead to growth of the prostate, but also to hair loss.
Studies have shown that saw palmetto might inhibit an enzyme known as 5-alpha-reductase that enables DHT to be generated from testosterone. While this is a possibility, the evidence for saw palmetto actively reducing hair loss in men of a certain age is scant, and while the theory might very well be valid, there is currently no practical evidence obtained by means of controlled testing.
The Health Benefits of Saw Palmetto
The main health benefit of saw palmetto is its effect on the prostate gland, a component of the male reproductive system responsible for the secretion of seminal fluid as a mobile carrier for the spermatozoa generated by the testes. As men age, this gland tends to enlarge, applying pressure to the urethra, the narrow tube connecting the bladder to the penis and the outside world. Saw palmetto can be used both to delay the onset of this and to help reduce the swelling so as to relieve the discomfort caused by the condition, known technically as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
The term 'benign' is very important, indicating that the swelling is not cancerous. In fact, although it rarely changes back to normal, BPH, as it is commonly known, is usually more annoying and inconvenient than anything else although many men experience severe discomfort.
There are a few other health benefits claimed for saw palmetto, and some claim it to offer a remedy for hair loss (propecia) in elderly men - this has yet to proven by supervised testing. Its claimed effect on acne is also unproven, and although many believe it safe to say that the benefits of saw palmetto are limited to its effect on BPH, this might not be the whole story. Saw palmetto is certainly effective in reducing the severe effects of an enlarged prostate, but many also find it useful in treating a number of other male health problems and its prolonged use is believed to help significantly reduce the likelihood of men contracting prostate cancer.
