What Are Senna Leaves
Senna leaves come from a genus of flowering plants (sennas) native to most tropical regions. They have been used for hundreds of years or more as a purgative, particularly effective for constipation or blockages on the lower bowel. Senna leaves irritate the mucosa of the colon and so increase the peristaltic pumping motion of the colon. It is for its laxative properties that senna is best known, although it also possesses some other useful properties.
Senna leaves can be used to eradicate intestinal worms and generally help to maintain a healthy bowel. The active components of the senna leaf are anthraquinone glycosides that stimulate the colon's peristaltic motion, although you should take care not to use it too much because your colon could become dependent on it. That means that you could find it difficult to pass normal stools without taking senna leaves.
If you have a problem, however, then senna leaves are safe to take on incidental occasions but not as your first call whenever you feel the need. Give nature time to run its course before resorting to senna leaves.
Using Senna Leaves as a Laxative
Senna leaves contain anthraquinone glycosides that stimulate the nerve endings of the intestine and particularly the large intestine, the colon, where most blockages that cause constipation occur. This stimulates the motion known as peristaltic motion, the pumping motion used by your body, and also by industry, to move thick sludges through pipes. Sometimes these sludges become too dry, lacking in moisture, and so become difficult to compress and move by a peristaltic pump.
In order to move them you can one of two things: either render them less solid, which is difficult in the colon, or increase the strength of the peristaltic pumping motion. Senna leaves do the second of these, and so move the compacted stool through your system. You can also drink plenty water which might hydrate the stool, although it may also be absorbed by your intestinal system before the water reaches the blockage.
Nevertheless, senna leaf is very effective, easy to use and enables the compacted stool to be removed from your body in a natural and relatively painless way.
As a dietary supplement, take 2 or 3 capsules a day with meals or a glass of water.
