How Nattokinase Improves the Health of Your Heart
Nattokinase is obtained from an unusual form of dietary supplement, in that it is obtained by fermenting boiled soybeans. The initial product from this process is natto, a Japanese delicacy with a nutty flavor and a strong cheesy smell, and usually taken for breakfast. Through extraction and purification, the enzyme nattokinase is obtained, which is marketed as a treatment for gastrointestinal disorders, immune system problems and also for some skin conditions. However, it also believed to break down blood clots and reduce blood pressure.
The latter two properties are of importance to the health of your heart, since high blood pressure can lead to more serious heart conditions and blood clots, and is often the cause of heart attacks and coronary thrombosis. This condition can start with cholesterol being oxidized in your arteries by free radicals, particularly LDL cholesterol, which results in it dropping out of the blood onto the internal surface of your arteries. The arteries become progressively narrowed until small blood clots can totally block the flow of blood to and within your heart.
Nattokinase can reduce the time taken to dissolve the fibrin that holds the clots together by as much as 48%, and so is a sensible precautionary supplement to take, particularly by those with higher cholesterol levels. It also reduces blood pressure significantly, and both these effects have been demonstrated by several tests on animal and human subjects. If you are taking Aspirin or Warfarin, or any other drug to thin your blood, you must let your physician know that you intend using the clot-eating enzyme, nattokinase.
