Horsetail Tea by Buddha Teas

Horsetail tea comes from a unique feathery reed-like plant with a history that goes back to prehistoric times. It is light in flavor and aroma.

Fossil records of horsetail detail the history of this remarkable plant. With its growth dating back to prehistoric times, horsetail is frequently called a living fossil. These plants are long and thin, like reeds, and bear skinny leaves that give it a wispy appearance, much a brush. The origin of its name is rather debated. Most believe the name refers to its resemblance to a horse tail, but it is also possible to have come from one of its historic uses, when the branches were tied to a horse’s tail to chase away flies when flicked. Horsetail was also employed as natural brush used to clean cookware. However, it was mainly used as an ingredient for cooking, served raw or cooked like asparagus. Once dried, it makes a light herbal tea.

More than simply a fresh herbal tea, horsetail tea humbly offers a broad variety of important nutrients. Horsetail is a natural source of vitamin C and niacin, along with several important minerals, such as silica, potassium, calcium, aluminum, even sulfur. Horsetail also contains natural antioxidants, and offers a number of active constituents, including fiber, protein, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, collagen and more. Like many herbal teas, beneath its subtleties, horsetail tea provides a wealth of positive qualities.
