Activated Charcoal for teeth

Many often see the word ‘charcoal’ and think, how can that help to whiten my teeth? Traditional charcoal is what is used on fires and is very different from its counterpart, Activated Charcoal. The latter, and the one with a number of wellbeing and cosmetic benefits, is made by burning a source of carbon such as coconut shells. When it burns, the high temperatures ‘activates’ the charcoal by removing the oxygen to produce a highly absorbent form that is made up of millions of minuscule pores. These can bind to toxins and historically has been used worldwide for centuries for oral hygiene as well as to help whiten teeth.

The reasons Activated Charcoal became popular for oral hygiene is that firstly, other materials used, such as salt, could abrade the teeth and cause damage. Secondly, thanks to its absorbent properties, Activated Charcoal can be used to help with surface staining and is also said to be useful for those with bad breath. Activated Charcoal Toothpaste
