Use and Safety of PABA Supplements
PABA supplements can be taken for its antioxidant properties, whereby it can neutralize free radicals formed during human metabolism and cellular respiration and also by exposure to atmospheric pollutants. By doing so, PABA can prevent to a large extent the skin cell destruction that such free radicals can cause and also prevent internal cell damage for the same reason.
PABA, correctly known as para-aminobenzoic acid, also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, and can reduce the inflammation and pain of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. It also plays a large part in efficient red blood cell formation and is converted to folate by bacteria in the gut. This latter usage, however, should not be used by pregnant women as a source of folate or folic acid without the consent of their physician.
PABA is generally a safe supplement to take, and while there is no recommended US RDA, a good intake is from 30 to 100 mg. Larger amounts can be taken, though it has been found that an intake of 8 grams (8,000 mg) can lead to liver damage and fever. However, that is massively more than recommended, and PABA is generally considered a safe supplement.
PABAPara Amino Benzoic Acid * 100 mg PABA, or para-aminobenzoic acid, is generally classified with the B-vitamin family, although it is not itself a vitamin. Its best known role is as a precursor for folic acid production. Folic acid is important in cell division and the healthy development and structure of red blood cells. |
