The interest in linking probiotics and mental health conditions is gaining popularity. The bowel and the brain have separate nervous systems, but similar mechanisms for creating pathways of communicating. This leads researchers to believe the bowel and the brain can "communicate" with each other. This message exchange is believed to result in various conditions in the human body. Researchers are doing studies to see if there is a link between probiotics as a treatment for mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. There are not many studies done on this specific correlation and the results of these studies, varied. Due to this variation in results, there needs to be a larger scope of study to determine if probiotics can be used as a treatment.
