Children’s diabetes risk on the rise
Illeana Bargas, M.D., physician at the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center in New York City, warns that an alarming number of children are being diagnosed for Type II (adult onset) diabetes.
Bargas says that the cause of this rise is obvious—today one in five children is obese, and the number has grown 22 percent in the last fifteen years. Obesity, inactivity and poor diet are all associated with the development of type II diabetes, because they all can affect the function of blood sugar metabolism. Many health care professionals feel that Type II diabetes can be prevented by improving diet and engaging in more physical activity. T
