CBD Oil Proving Beneficial For Individuals With Autism

CBD, that is cannabis, (marijuana-based) or cannabidiol, (hemp-based) oil is already noted for its positive medicinal affects as an anti-inflammatory agent and a mood-booster and as a compound that mitigates the potential of seizures. It is also gaining ground as a supplement that positively affects those with autism.

Unfortunately, however, while both types of CBD appear to be beneficial to autism-sufferers, it seems that in the case of autism the psychoactive element available in the cannabis, or marijuana-based oil, has an edge over the hemp-based product.

Nonetheless, autism-sufferers and parents of autism-sufferers should know that considerable relief may be possibly obtained even with the hemp-based product, which is already legal, or legal with conditions (although not FDA approved) in many of the fifty states and which will hopefully soon be legal in all of them.

Key Takeaways:

  • One high profile case, involving the use of CBD oil, involved a non-speaking autistic 9 yr. old, who became verbal after two days of oil usage.
  • Study suggests that while cannabis and cannabidiol are both effective for autism-sufferers, the addition of the psychoactive substance, THC, may make cannabis the more effective choice.
  • Currently, cannabis oil is not FDA approved and is only legal, or legal under certain conditions, in some states.

"Marijuana (cannabis) and hemp-derived products, including CBD, are known to provide relief from chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation, seizures, fibromyalgia, autism and other related conditions."

As possession of cannabis slowly starts to become legal, it is important to be aware of the possible effects in those who use the drug. Recent studies have revealed that cannabis may actually contribute to health by potentially decreasing the likelihood of stroke and contribute to brain activity. In a study involving 175 volunteers, researchers observed that cannabis users had an increased systemic flow of blood and oxygen, including within the brain, specifically around the forebrain, related to learning. In addition, head researcher, Dr. Francesca Filbey, states that the primary ingredient in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which dilates blood vessels, causing a drop in blood pressure, and increasing blood flow.

Key Takeaways:

  • Smoking or eating marijuana (cannabis) can reduce the likelihood of having a stroke because oxygen and blood flow are improved.
  • Studies in the past focused more on cognitive and psychological effects of marijuana. Now researchers are also paying attention to physical effects.
  • Blood flow in the part of the brain that affects learning is increased when marijuana is used.

"Past marijuana research has shown changes in cognitive functions such as memory and executive functioning,"

Current Virginia legislation under consideration would expand the use of cannabis oils containing CBD and THCA to more patients than just those with certain kinds of seizure disorders. The new bill would include patients who suffer from AIDS/ HIV, Krohn's and other disorders where treatment is deemed appropriate by a doctor. The bill would also allow two important aspects:it would allow pharmacies to manufacture products and also end the current policy of suspending drivers license for those in possession.

Key Takeaways:

  • Under current Virginia law, oil made from CBD or THCA (both compounds found in cannabis) is legal to possess and use for medical purposes, but only for those with intractable epilepsy.
  • The proposal also allows pharmacies to manufacture and distribute the medicines to qualified patients.
  • Virginia’s full legislature also recently passed a measure to end driver’s license suspensions for marijuana possession charges.

"The newly-approved measure would greatly expand the list of conditions that makes someone eligible to use these medicines to include HIV/AIDS, cancer, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis and several others."
