What is Rhodiola?
Correctly named Rhodiola rosea, you might know this plant better as Aaron's Rod, Roseroot or Golden Root. It grows in colder regions such as the Arctic and the high mountains of each of the continents, including the Alps, Rockies and Himalayas. It is a perennial, and has both male and female species.
Its use in herbal and traditional medicine is as an antidepressant, immune system enhancer and weight loss supplement among other common uses. In fact, it has been used as far back as ancient Greece and then the Vikings, for much the same applications: increasing physical strength and endurance. Today, Rhodiola is used as a supplement to support the immune system, reduce recovery time after extreme workouts and for many other purposes.
If you feel washed out after exercising, find it difficult to lose weight or always feel under stress, then a Rhodiola supplement will likely help you with each of these symptoms. Regard it as a general pick-me-up or tonic with other useful benefits.
Rhodiola and Your Heart
Rhodiola rosea offers a number of useful general benefits to your health, although it has also be found to be effective in treating a number of cardiac problems that have either been caused by stress or aggravated by it. When you become 'stressed' in terms of the normally accepted meaning of the word, your adrenal glands release corticosteroids and catecholamines. The normal effect of such substances is to increase your blood pressure, your potassium levels and your cholesterol levels, each of which is a significant risk factor for heart disease.
A Rhodiola supplement can reduce the levels of harmful forms of cholesterol that are dangerous to your heart, and also helps to reduce the likelihood of arrhythmia in the contractions of your heart muscle. Cyclic-AMP is a secondary messenger between the inside and the outside of the cells of your heart muscle. It controls the relative amounts of calcium in these areas that in turn determines the contraction regularity or heartbeat. Rhodiola decreases the amount of cyclic-AMP that is released into your cardiac cells, and hence helps you to maintain a steady and healthy heartbeat.
