Is Cascara Sagrada Safe to Use?

Much has been made of the 2002 FDA decision to ban the sale of over-the-counter medicines using cascara sagrada, and it has even been claimed that it is carcinogenic. As of April 2011 there has been no evidence of this herb causing cancer in a single individual, even when taken on a continuous basis. In fact, tests are showing it to possess anti-tumor properties. Although the FDA in their wisdom believed that more tests should be carried out before it could be used as an ingredient in new OTC constipation remedies, it was still permitted in those remedies already in existence.

It wasn't considered so bad that it should be taken off the shelf, and is permitted to be sold in herbal supplement format. So basically, the FDA doesn't believe cascara sagrada to be unsafe; it just requires companies using it in new products to carry out the proper tests. In fact, cascara sagrada is safe if used for acute or chronic constipation and not as a regular supplement. If taken too frequently it can discolor the colon, and kill off some colon cells. However, there is no evidence whatsoever that this causes health problems, and in fact displays some anti-cancer properties (Chen, H. C., Hsieh, W. T., Chang, W. C., and Chung, J. G. Aloe-emodin induced in vitro G2/M arrest of cell cycle in human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. Food Chem Toxicol 2004;42(8):1251-1257 and others)

There is still no better laxative for stubborn constipation than cascara sagrada, and it is particularly useful for those suffering hemorrhoids since the stool it produces is soft, not hard. So the answer to the question is yes, cascara sagrada is safe to use, so long as it is used to treat constipation and not taken every day, week after week.

How Does Cascara Sagrada Work?

Cascara sagrada is a powerful laxative that stimulates the intestine and colon into a powerful wave-like peristaltic motion that moves even the most stubborn constipation. It also helps to soften the stool and should be taken on an empty stomach with about 8 ounces of water - just under a half pint. If used too frequently, it can cause dependency with your bowel failing to work at all without it - but for that to take place you have to use it daily over a lengthy period of time. When used to deal with isolated cases of constipation it is perfectly safe to use.

Had it been otherwise, it would not have been in common use for over a thousand years by Native Americans and early settlers. Nor would the FDA be allowing its use now. The substances that induce the powerful peristaltic movement are anthraquinones peculiar to the American buckthorn - the tree from which cascara sagrada, 'the sacred bark', is taken.

The anthraquinone glycosides are believed to be absorbed through the small intestine, induce the synthesis of nitric oxide which relaxes the muscles and initiates the peristalsis that expels the blockage. Aloin and anthracene also promote the catharsis that purges the bowels.

Cascara sagrada is mostly used for constipation.Cascara sagrada contains compounds called anthroquinones, which are responsible for cascara's powerful laxative effects. Anthraquinones trigger contractions in the colon, called peristalsis, which causes the urge to have a bowel movement. Today, it is one of the most common herbal laxatives. In addition to being a powerful laxative, cascara is also believed to improve the muscle tone of the colon walls.
