Using Hawthorn Berries for Heart Disease
Hawthorn berries have been used in folk medicine for as far back as we know, and its use in the treatment of heart disease is recorded as far back as the 1st century AD. Without understanding the reasons for it, 19th century physicians used hawthorn berries to treat circulatory conditions and illnesses of the respiratory tract. Such problems were associated with arterial narrowing and blockage, high blood pressure, heart palpitations and irregularity, and heart failure.
Today, hawthorn berries are used by many people to treat similar conditions, and we have a better understanding of why the berries should display these properties than our forefathers did. Although not genuinely berries, but pomes containing a single seed, the haws, as they are also known as, are rich in flavonoids and oligomeric procyanadins offering powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties specific to the cardiovascular system.
Not only do these flavonoids prevent or reduce the free radical oxidation of LDL cholesterol that leads to atherosclerosis, but also reduce inflammation. They are also vasodilators, enabling the blood vessels to dilate and so reduce blood pressure, important when arteries are being narrowed by cholesterol plaques. If you have heart problems, or wish to prevent them, then hawthorn berries is an excellent choice of supplement.Hawthorn Berries and High Blood Pressure
Hawthorn berries are high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. They are rich in flavonoids such as quercetin, rutin, catechin and cyanadins, all of which are powerful free radical scavengers and anti-inflammatories. One cause of high blood pressure is narrowing and hardening of the arties through free radical activity. For example, oxidation of LDL lipids results in the deposition of cholesterol on the artery wall, thus effectively narrowing them. The heart then has to exert a greater pressure through the narrowing tube in order to maintain an adequate oxygen supply throughout the body.
By preventing this, hawthorn berries can help prevent this form of high blood pressure. Caffeic acid prevents platelet aggregation and thickening of the blood, another condition that can raise your blood pressure. Rutin strengthens the capillaries, and another component of hawthorn berries, epicatechin, is a vasodilator, relaxing the smooth muscles of the blood vessels, rendering them easier to dilate and so help to reduce high blood pressure.
Hawthorn berries are used by many people suffering high blood pressure, and can also be used to prevent it and maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. More research is needed to prove these results scientifically, but although definitive proof is still needed, the results from popular use are all that many people need. A supplement can also be used to boost the effect of other HBP medication since tests have shown no reaction or hypersensitivity.
As a dietary supplement, take two or three capsules two times a day with meals or a glass of water.
