Using Nettle Leaves to Treat Allergies
Allergies are a manifestation of an over-reaction of your immune system to irritants and certain chemicals and biological species that initial the inflammatory response to tissue irritation and pathogens. People could have immune reactions rendering them allergic to pollen, hairs, certain chemicals and even some insects, and hay fever is generally regarded as the most common allergic reaction of them all.
Nettle leaves contain anti-inflammatories that help to moderate the inflammatory response of the immune system, and also anti-histamines that act to neutralize histamine. This is an organic nitrogen molecule that is released by the immune system to enable fluids to more easily get to the site of the inflammation. Histamine causes the typical runny nose and sneezing of hay fever, and also the swelling and itchiness of many allergic skin conditions.
Antihistamines neutralize this and help to reduce the severity of the allergic reaction. By means of a combination of antihistamines and anti-inflammatories, a nettle leave extract or capsule is an ideal treatment for an allergy.
Using Nettle Root Extract for an Enlarged Prostate
Nettle root extract can be used to ease the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, correctly known as benign prostatic hypertrophy BPH). One of the more upsetting symptoms of this condition, common in men over 50 years old, is urine retention that can lead to an even more serious health condition. Nettle root extract can promote the excretion of urea and chlorides from urine, and when added to the diuretic action of nettle leaves, the nettle plant can help to make the condition more tolerable. Night-time urination becomes less frequent, since men are then able to urinate successfully during the day.
It is believed that nettle root, and to a lesser extent the leaves, prevents the metabolism of 5-alpha-reductase from testosterone. This enzyme promotes growth of the prostate gland in middle age when all growth should have ceased at maturity. In fact tests have indicated that taking nettle root extract in combination with a supplement of saw palmetto, an effect at least as effective as the prescription drug Finasteride can be achieved. In fact, the German Commission E approves nettle as being a valid treatment for BPH
