Saw Palmetto: What is it and How Does it Affect Me?
If you are male, then saw palmetto is likely to affect you at some time in your life. The plant is a small palm, growing to between 3 and 6 feet high, with a sprawling rather than an erect trunk. It is native to the south eastern parts of the USA, around the Gulf and Atlantic coastal areas such as Florida and as far inland as Arkansas.
The leaves are fan-like in appearance, and its fruit is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols including beta-sitosterol. It also contains tannins, alkaloids and polysaccharides that help to relieve problems with the prostate gland, support the immune system and offer relieve from the symptoms of colds and flu. Saw palmetto has been claimed to help resolve male baldness and to reduce the effects of acne, although these have yet to be proved and the reason for such claims are not clear.
What is clear is that saw palmetto can be used to reduce the swelling of benign prostatic hyperplasia and help to prevent the problems associated with an enlarged prostate and other problems of the lower urinary tract.
As a dietary supplement, take 2 or 3 capsules two times a day with meals or a glass of water.
