What Can Turmeric Extract Do For You?
Turmeric is more than just a culinary spice: like most highly colored food, this bright orange ground ginger root offers a number of health benefits including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric extract come from the rhizome of a species of ginger that is boiled, dried and then ground into a vibrant orange powder. It can be taken in capsule form or used in cookery. What conditions can turmeric be used to treat, control or avoid?
First, its anti-inflammatory properties render turmeric useful in treating conditions involving painful swelling and inflammation, such as arthritis, gout, painful swelling around wounds, osteoporosis, and it is even being studied as a means of controlling diabetes and destroying the amyloid-beta oligomers and aggregates of Alzheimer's disease. Add to that the large number of degenerative conditions that occur with age due to inflammation and free radical oxidation of body cells, then turmeric extract becomes a powerful and safe way to help treat or even avoid them. Although some of these properties still have to be proven with human tests, they are still too significant to ignore.
Turmeric Extract and Curcumin
The main active component in turmeric extract is curcumin, responsible for the vast majority of the health effects of turmeric. In fact, the terms 'turmeric extract' and 'curcumin' are often used synonymously. While not unique in its activity, curcumin is a useful biochemical in that it is a polyphenol, a family of compounds renowned for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The molecule also contains two alcohol and two aromatic ketone functional groups, the latter of which can switch between the ketone and enol variations.
It thus possesses the capacity to undergo a number of biochemical reactions, and the antioxidant effect of curcumin is largely acquired through its ability to boost levels of glutathione S-transferase, frequently referred to as a biological 'master' antioxidant. It prevents a substance known as prostaglandin E2 from forming, this being one of the primary molecules responsible for inflammation.
Turmeric extract, through its curcumin content, also inhibits the enzymes COX-2 and 5-LOX, both of which are important components of the inflammatory response of your immune system. It is as effective a COX inhibitor as most prescription and OTC NSAIDS used to treat inflammation, and has the added benefit of preventing DNA mutations that not only helps your cells to remain healthy but is also believed to prevent cancerous cells from developing.
By taking a supplement of turmeric extract, you are tackling inflammation, cellular oxidation and aging at the root cause of these conditions: by preventing cellular and biochemical destructive oxidation and moderating the immune system response known as inflammation.
