|Can Xylitol Gum Help Prevent Cavities? |
Dental cavities are a common problem in both children and adults. A dental cavity is caused by bacteria fermenting sugar left on teeth after an individual has taken sugary things. When fermented, sugar turns into an acid that eats into the teeth eroding the enamel thus creating the cavity. As a solution, scientist in Finland in 1960's came up with xylitol. Xylitol is just like the normal sugar only that it cannot be fermented by the bacteria found in the mouth. Xylitol sugar can hence be used to make xylitol gum instead of the normal sugar.
The gum is able to prevent tooth decay since bacteria cannot ferment xylitol and hence no risk of dental cavity. Xylitol is also known to inhibit the growth of the bacteria hence reducing their population in ones mouth. Since plaque from fermented sugar, replacement of sugar in gum will mean no opportunity for the plaque to occur hence no dental cavities. Therefore using xylitol gum helps prevent cavities.
