How Bitter Orange Enables you to Lose Weight

Bitter orange is better known as the Seville orange, an orange with a bitter taste originating from China but also common to the areas around Seville in Spain. Its correct name is Lewis Citrus Aurantium, and it enables you to lose weight in two ways.

a) Bitter orange, whether you screw up your eyes and eat the fruit as you would a lemon or take it in the form of a capsule, will make you feel less like eating - it reduces your appetite and so you tend to consume fewer calories. It is what is known as an 'appetite suppressant'.

b) Bitter orange is also thermogenic, possessing the ability to increase your metabolic rate - the rate at which your body naturally uses up energy when you are at rest or even sleeping. Burn more energy then, and you will burn fat and lose weight at a significantly faster rate than if you simply depended upon dieting and eating fewer carbohydrates.

By taking bitter orange in any form, you will find it easier to lose weight and fatty tissue, and if you also exercise while doing so then you can direct that fat loss to targeted areas of your body, such as your thighs, stomach or arms - wherever you feel you are the biggest!

The Constituents of Bitter Orange

Bitter orange, another name for the small sour-tasting Seville orange, is commonly used by those with a desire to lose weight and reduce their body fat. It does so by increasing your metabolism and reducing your hunger, but what is it about this small bitter-tasting orange that makes it so effective in doing that?

In fact, bitter orange contains a range of phytochemicals in addition to the Vitamins C that you would expect of an orange - and its bitter taste indicates that it is not packed with sugars that could contribute to your levels of fatty tissue. It does, however, contain the adrenergic amines tyramine, octopamine and synephrine, in addition to flavonoid glycosides, beta-sitosterol and monoterpene hydrocarbons, mainly limonene.

Not only is this combination highly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce premature aging an heart disease, but the amines mentioned are similar in structure and function to the ephedrine alkaloids that are used to increase the metabolic rate, burn fat and help the body to use amino acids to build fresh muscle tissue. By taking a supplement of bitter orange, it is possible to replace fat with muscle and effect a permanent increase in your metabolic rate that enables a longer-lasting ability to lose fat and remain athletic and slim.
