A few decades ago, no man would have predicted ginseng, a plant with five leaves and a long stem would be facing extinction. The plant with red berries takes some years to mature and it has been proved to have many healthy benefits.

Ginseng is a plant found in the genus Panax which has only 11 species of perennial slow growing plants.

Plants in this genus are mainly found in East Asia where there is cooler climates. The two biggest species of ginseng are the American and the Asian ginseng. The American ginseng is exported to the Asian market particularly China. The Siberian ginseng is actually not a member of this species despite its name. Its wooden roots don't match the fleshy roots of the members of this species.

Ginseng is believed to be an adaptogen, a substance that aids the human body to heal and resume its healthy status. It has been used to improve the health status of accident victims and patient healing surgery wounds.
