Dong Quai

What is it?
The root is the part of the Dong Quai plant that is used in Chinese medicine. The roots occur in different shapes and colors, generally whitish- grey or yellowish-grey. It is one of the most widely used herbs in China and in the American market for female conditions. Dong Quai means "state of return" or "proper order." Chinese practitioners believe the root helps imbalanced conditions return to normal.

Where is it from?
Dong Quai is a member of the celery family. Greenish - white flowers bloom from May to August, and the plant is typically found growing in damp mountain ravines, meadows, river banks and coastal areas.

What is it used for?
It helps invigorate vital energy and nourish blood. Research suggests that the herb increases oxygen absorption by the liver, increases metabolism, is mildly antibiotic and mildly sedative. Dong Quai is supportive for fibrocystic breast disease, menopause, and premenstrual syndrome.
