Potassium
Applications: Works in tandem with sodium for proper electrolyte balance and contributes to heart muscle health, changes glycogen to glucose and promotes healing. In cases of diarrhea, excessive perspiration, laxative or diuretic use, potassium depletion can occur which can cause heart irregularities. It is used for stress, diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, hypoglycemia and arthritis.
Sources: Fresh fruits and vegetables (especially bananas, apricots, avocados and dates), meat, and dairy products.
Interactions: Anyone taking digitalis, diuretics and angiotensin type hypertension drugs should not take potassium unless under the direct orders of their physician. Potassium/sodium ratios must be balanced in order for both to function properly. Too much sodium can disrupt the action of potassium and cause its excretion.
Recommendations: Potassium citrate or aspartate or any other chelated form is recommended.
